Chapter three

"The start to a summer evenin."

That night, Susannah and Conrad were sitting at the heads of the dining room table, their mom, Diana and Belly sat on the left while Steven and Jeremiah sat on the right, where they all were eating dinner, as Steven had his phone out showing something to Jeremiah, the two of them were laughing "Steven, I swear to god, if you look at that phone one more time, I'm putting it in the screen basket." their mom shared, as Steven brought his phone down "it's just, we want to see your beautiful faces. Can dinner be a screen free zone? You know, like the olden days." Susannah shared.

As their mom laughed, Diana watched her brother look at his phone again "Steven, what did they just say?" she asked him, as Jeremiah reached over, grabbing the phone, he stood up, throwing the phone to the extra chair in the room "dude, are you kidding me?" Steven asked, as it went in "boom! Nailed it." Jeremiah shared, as him and Diana laughed "okay, okay, okay, we get it, you've been working out." Steven shared "is that jealousy?" Diana asked, furrowing her brows, Belly nodded "I think so." she told her "uh, no, actually, it's all about the lean look now. Otherwise, you can't wear tailored suits." Steven shared.

As they all laughed "where are you wearing a tailored suit?" Diana asked him "tailored suits." Conrad said, as Steven looked to him "when are you leaving for training camp, man?" he asked him, as things got quite, they all looked to him "uh, he quit football." Jeremiah told them all "what? Why? You loved football. I mean you forced us all to play every summer." Diana shared, having not expected that "yeah, are you kidding me, man? I'd..I'd love to play college ball." Steven shared "he can always change his mind." Susannah shared "I'm not gonna change my mind. I was just gonna sit on the bench all season anyways." Conrad shared.

"Well, if you're not playing football anymore, what are you gonna do all summer?" their mom asked "oh, dude, you can work at the club. Yeah, with me and Jere.' Steven shared "yeah." Jeremiah told him "I'm not gonna work at the club." Conrad told them "wait, you guys are working this summer?" Belly asked them "yeah, um, I'm lifeguarding, and Steven's working at the snack shop." Jeremiah shared, as him and Steven fist bumped, Diana raised her brows "so now people won't just be throwing themselves at you but now drowning themselves for your attention." she shared, drinking her water and as she did, Conrad, Steven and Belly laughed.

"Oh, girls, I almost forgot." Susannah shared, as she stood up, walking over to the cabinet near by, she grabbed two letters walking back over to them "I have a surprise for the both of you." she shared, holding them out, Diana took them as she handed Belly her's, their mom sighed "so this is why you had to stop by the country club." she shared, as Susannah hummed, Diana and Belly began opening them "what, uh, wha..wha..what is that?" Steven asked "I wrangled Belly and Diana invitations to be debutantes." Susannah shared.

"Is that the thing where the girls wear white dresses and curtsy?" Belly asked "I don't think this is for us." Diana shared "it's when a girl comes of age and is presented to society, I..I know it sounds silly , but I swear it's fun. Girls come from all over New England to cousins just to be a apart of it." Susannah shared, as Diana raised her brows "so it's a competition?" she asked "no, it's more about making new friends." Susannah shared "I cannot believe you are still holding on to this archaic dream." their mom shared, as she stood up, walking into the kitchen.

"No, it used to be about finding a husband, but now it's about networking. They teach you leadership skills, like how to market yourself, and it benefits charity. It's, um, like a bat mitzvah." Susannah shared, drinking the rest of her wine, as their mom walked in with another bottle, laughing "it is not like a bat mitzvah. There is nothing religious about a debutante ball." she shared, sitting down.
