As I stared into the pot of burnt boba, I thought to myself;

'Why do bad things always happen to me?'

My life usually stays the same. Nothing special ever really happens to me, which has been making me feel pretty bored. When something does happen, it's always something bad. In this case, it's a burning pot a boba that I'm going to have to remake. It seems like I constantly attract bad things into my life. If there's a chance for something bad to happen, the universe always sends it my way. I've always wished to have an interesting life, so maybe this is the universe's way of entertaining itself. I'm a one-man reality TV show with only one viewer.

I poured some more brown sugar into the pot, hoping that it would somehow bring it back to life. Apparently, adding sugar to an already burning pot only makes it burn worse. I jumped back as the boba continued to blacken, beginning to smell like the charred remains of my hopes and dreams. I looked down at the stove top and realized that I forgot to turn it off.

I reached for the pot, holding both of the handles. Just like how I forgot to turn the stove top off, I forgot that the pot is hot. Even worse, I forgot that the oven mitts were on the counter next to me. Luckily enough, the pot came with silicone handles. Unfortunately, the pot was too old and worn-out to still have both silicone handles intact. My right hand began to sizzle and I dropped the pot onto the stove top. I groaned in pain as I held my hand in my chest. I sat on the floor in agony, wondering how I could've been so distracted to let the boba burn. Of course, I actually did know what was distracting me.

Lila Padilla.

She had been the love of my life for two years. Ever since she accidentally vomited on me during frog dissection, I've been hooked. Not because of the vomit, obviously. I already knew she was pretty, but the hour we spent waiting in the nurse's office after that was amazing. We talked about our classes and friends, which wasn't too deep for a life changing interaction. Nevertheless, the connection we had was strong. We were laughing with each other and overall had a great time. The only issue was that was the last true interaction we had. We would still occasionally say hi to each other, but we never became the friends I hoped we would become. It might have been due to her getting an online boyfriend not soon after.

They broke up after half a year, mainly due to the fact that he lived in another state. I knew that I would become her next boyfriend, and I would be even better. Especially since I actually knew her in person. I'd been too shy to talk to her for the past year. I've had my chances to finally have a conversation with her, but they always turn out to be a mess. If I wasn't so weird around my crushes, we could've been married by now. I just continued to say hi in passing, hoping that she would remember that amazing hour we spent together. Over the past few months, she'd stopped saying hi back to me. I didn't let that get the best of me, because I don't blame her at all. I wouldn't want to keep saying hi to some rando that I've only talked to once. I just knew that I had to get on her radar somehow.

About a month ago, Lila was hired by Boba In Luv. After finding out, I begged the Assistant Manager to never put her on any of my shifts. I knew I would be very awkward around her, and I wouldn't want to deal with that for the entirety of my shift. Even worse, I didn't want her to deal with me for an entirety of her shift. The assistant manager said he would try his best, but there were no promises. He's pulled through for me before, so I knew he would help me out. That was until I clocked in today and saw her name on the schedule.

"August? You okay?" I heard Lila call from the front of the store.

"Yeah!" I uttered, wincing in pain.

Lila ran into the back, catching me sitting on the dirty floor.

"What happened?!" she said frantically.
