I look over at him trying to change the radio station to something other than Oldies country and classical music. After surfing the stations for a while, we hear the beginning of a song blaring through the speakers of my old “hippie van”, as most people call it but I call it Phil. I squeal and we both look at each other locking eyes with the happiest faces, “It’s our song!”, we both yell and then start singing along and restrictively dance in our seats. Having the largest smiles on our faces when the song finishes we decide to listen to this station for as long as we have it.
I hear him mutter something next to me. Turning down the radio, “What was that?”, ask swerving around a group of pot-holes in the road. We are on some backroads of Montana. We have been driving for about 2 days, Originally starting out in our home state of Oregon, only stopping for gas, restroom and snack breaks.
“Where do you think we are going to end up?, he asks examining a action figure he found on the floor of the van.
“Hopefully somewhere cool. We have the whole summer to get there!”, I say excitedly. This is how we both decided to spend our summers, saving up all year for gas money. We both have always dreamed of going on an unknown destination road trip, and now our dreams are coming true. Josh just smiles at me, muttering something to himself obviously not meant for my hearing.
Josh and I have been friends since birth basically. Our mothers are best friends and both got pregnant around the same time, Josh’s mother a year before my mother. Him and I have been pushed together for years. Realizing that we couldn’t exactly hate each other we decided to become best friends. I know everything about Josh and he knows everything about me. He is like a brother to me, We even look a bit alike. We both have the same green eyes and brown hair; same sense of humor; mostly same music taste. Most people when we both meet them for the first time ask if we are either dating or brother and sister. I’ve gotten so used to being asked that it doesn't even annoy me anymore.
Starting to sense Josh’s boredom i ask, “favorite color?”
“Come on Kelsey you already know these, you ask me the same questions every day! you’re so boring.”, He answers smiling at me dodging my fist aiming for his arm, “Fine, Beige.”
Satisfied I ask, “Favorite animal?”
“A speck of dust.”
“Favorite word?”
“Word.”, Smiling at himself proud of his boring answers.
“And I’m the boring one? Beige, Word, and dust isn't even an animal!”, yell at him. “You need to get a social life and not just stay in your room studying all the time.”
“Maybe you need to actually study, Miss. I-failed-half-my-classes-last-year.” He says back at me. “Pullover I want to drive now!”
I pull over to the side of the road and make him walk around the van while I just crawl over the seats.
After he gets in he starts the car and with a mischievous grin says, “Ready to find somewhere cool, darling?”
