Layla

6/25/13

4:35 P.M.

"Okay, class dismissed... Farewell," The teacher said, saying her last greeting in our class.

Students began to exit, some with tears, some with moist eyes, some happy to end this class, and some who don't care.

What was I exactly? I was happy to end this class. After all, school is very tiring. We finished answering our year-end exams, and now, it's time to say farewell to this Grade 11th class which was filled with memories, good and bad.

"Let's go?" my best friend, Calista asked me.

"Yeah sure,"

We went to a cafe, bringing our bags with us.

She decided to order for both of us.

She came with our drinks and sat down, giving me the drink.

We chatted for a while.

Suddenly my phone rang, to which I answered. I looked at the caller id and saw Aunt Merida's number.

"Hello, Aunty!" I said enthusiastically, gaining the attention of Calista.

"Hello Layla, where are you to be exact?" Aunt Merida asked.

"I'm at a cafe near my school. Classes just ended. Why?"

"Well, I believe your summer break is starting?"

I hummed in response.

"Well, I was wondering if you would want to stay here at my resort for the summer?"

"Oh umm, that would be great but may I ask why?" I asked.

"Well, your mother told me that you were always at home studying and so I thought it would be fun to let you come here and enjoy your teenage years. You are only young once anyway." She emphasized the word 'are'.

Studying was my only way of escape. I had made studying one of my ways to forget things and get comfort. How? By letting my mind get occupied by knowledge instead of sadness. Quite ironic though.

"Ohh well, that would be great since I miss you so much" my tone changing into a pitchy one, acting cute.

Aunt Merida chuckled.

"Well, I might not be able to be with you since I have work but Calista could tag along."

My phone was on speaker so Calista was able to hear her name getting mentioned. Calista took my phone gently.

"Hello, aunty Merida!" Calista said enthusiastically. "Yes, of course, I would love to tag along."
