(Note: because I have new ideas now, Ray, Norman, and Emma are all 16 and in grade 11, ratger than 17 and in grade 12 as they were before. This is mostly irrelevant tbh, but I'm putting in this note anyway. Also i probably have legal stuff messed up because im not a lawyer loll)

I never actually went to sleep. Norman thought I did, since I was faking it, but that was for his benefit. Once he was asleep, I checked my phone. I don't really know what happens now... I had a email that looked important, it was from the local police.

Ray Grace,

We have been informed that your legal guardian, Isabella Grace, has recently passed away. Because you are under 18, we are required to appoint you a new one. Your aunt, Sarah Grace, will pick you up tomorrow around 2pm at your house. Be ready to move. All your inheritance/possessions such as your current home will be given to you when you turn 18, as is stated in your inheritance.

For a  solid minute I just stared at the screen of my phone. I couldn't believe it. I guess I should have figured that I'd need to move but... right away? All I knew about my Aunt Sarah was that she lived in the next town over and that my mother despised her. I started shaking, and I hugged my legs to my chest and buried my face in my knees. I started crying soundlessly, I can't wake Norman. I sat like that for a long time, rocking back and forth. I don't want to leave him ...

"Ray?" Norman's voice whispered, sounding confused and sleepy

I murmured something incoherent and stayed as I was.

I heard Norman stand and sit next to me, then hug me,"It's gonna be okay, alright?"

"No . . ." was all I could say in response.

"What do you mean?"

"Norman, I don't have a legal guardian anymore. I'll have to go live with my aunt. Away from you," I said bitterly.

He sat up, "What!? No, you can't.."

I sighed, "I'm probably overreacting. She's only the next town over, so maybe I can go to the same school. I won't be able to walk you there, though, which means..." I trailed off, knowing Norman could figure it out. I couldn't protect him from Keith and them anymore.

I leaned on his shoulder. There, I slept until about 7am in the morning. I woke up to birds yapping and the sun in my face.

I stood, "Good morning, Norman."

He opened his eyes, "Huh? Oh, morning Ray."

"I think I should go now," I said to him. "I have to leave by 2pm."

"Text me tonight, yeah?"

"Yeah."

I left Norman's house quickly, trying not to wake his parents. It was Saturday, now, so no school until Monday. As soon as I entered my house, I started packing. There was too much to it. Pretty much just clothes, my phone and charger, school supplies, and my guitar. I hesitated on packing my guitar, but decided that Norman would like it. Once I was done, I stared at my phone awhile. I clicked on and off of my messages with Norman, wanting to text him but not knowing what. Finally, it reached 1:59pm. I figured my aunt would arrive it a few minutes now, but the doorbell rung pretty much exactly when it turned to 2:00pm.

I opened the door.
