For two years, Bryna had been a silent observer at Milo's pool parties, refusing to join the crowd, confining herself to the comfort of Milo's living room. With a drink in one hand and a plateful of snacks by her side, she would chat endlessly with Gerta, Milo's younger sister, who always seemed to understand her better than her own family.

Gerta usually tried her best to persuade Bryna to take a dive into the pool, but she never seemed to relent. "It's fun, Bry!" she'd say, "Why stay cooped up indoors while the world is enjoying itself outside?"

"The party's always better inside," Bryna would reply, with a fake smile, but Gerta knew better.

On this scorching day, however, something within Bryna had changed. The thought of staying inside the entire time, as she did habitually, felt almost unbearable.

"Bry, are you sure you don't want to come outside?" Gerta asked her once again, as they were sitting in the air-conditioned living room, while the party was in full swing in the backyard.

"Alright, fine.." Bryna conceded, with a nervous laugh, and the two friends stood up.

As she walked towards the open patio door, she hesitated for just a moment, taking a deep breath, and readying herself to step into the bright sunshine.

The pool party was in full swing, with vibrant energy permeating the air. The backyard was transformed into a lively oasis, adorned with colorful balloons, string lights, and the inviting aroma of grilled food wafting through the atmosphere. The sound of laughter and chatter filled the space, blending harmoniously with the upbeat music that pulsated from the speakers.

Bryna stood at the edge of the pool, her heart pounding in her chest, as she observed the scene before her. The water shimmered under the golden rays of the sun, inviting and refreshing. People splashed and swam, their joyful shrieks and playful banter creating an infectious ambience.

"Hey, Bryna!" exclaimed Milo, when he spotted her standing at the edge of the pool, with a playful smile on his face, "I was starting to think you'd ditch us after all!"

"I would never," grinned Bryna, and together, they dived into the crystal-clear water.

The world around her transformed into a blur of vibrant colors and exhilarating sensations as she broke through the water's surface. The refreshing coolness enveloped her, washing away her inhibitions and doubts. The echoes of laughter and playful splashes resonated in her ears as she emerged, gasping for air and grinning from ear to ear.

For the rest of the day, Bryna swam, played, and laughed, without a care in the world. It was only when the sky began to darken, and the first stars of the night twinkled above, that she allowed herself a moment to relax, and rejoin Gerta, who was sitting on a sun lounger. The party began to wind down. Most guests had left, leaving only a close group of friends by the dying embers of the bonfire.

Bryna sat close to the fire, arms wrapped around her knees, lost in thought. For the first time that day, her anxieties had returned. She watched Milo from a distance, laughing and chatting with some friends.

"Penny for your thoughts?" Milo's low, sonorous voice rumbled gently as he spoke, jolting her from her reverie. He sat down beside her, the warmth of his presence immediately comforting.

"Just enjoying the peace" she replied softly. An akward silence fell between them as the chatter of the others faded into the night.

After a moment, Milo spoke again "I'm glad you came out of your shell today. It was nice to see you having fun for once"

Bryna nodded, eyes fixed on the flickering flames. "Me too. Thanks for persuading me."

Milo turned to face her, a warm, affectionate smile playing on his lips. "You never have to thank me, Bry. You mean the world to me." Gently, he lifted her chin, his captivating gaze locked onto hers.

Bryna's breath caught in her throat at the emotion in Milo's eyes - his warm, hazel eyes, framed by strands of tousled brown hair, were filled with tenderness and longing. Her heart pounded as he leaned in slowly, searching her expression for any sign to stop. When she didn't pull away, his lips met hers in a lingering kiss, and Bryna's eyes fluttered closed.

The kiss deepened as the last shreds of hesitation fell away. Bryna wrapped her arms around Milo, losing herself in the affection of his embrace, all thoughts of the outside world fading away.

As they broke apart, Bryna smiled shyly. "Milo, I-"

"Bryna, there you are!" A shrill voice cut through the night. Bryna flinched as her stepmother Carla approached, eyes blazing with rage.

Before she could react, Carla's hand cracked across her face, the force snapping her head to the side. "You wretched girl," she hissed.

Milo jumped up in protest but Carla turned on him. "Don't you dare interfere, boy. She's coming with me now."

Bryna stood in silence, her cheek throbbing from the force of her stepmom's slap. She cast one last longing glance at Milo, who stood helplessly, his eyes filled with concern and anger. In that moment, Bryna felt a surge of determination to break free from the chains that had bound her for far too long.

Carla's grip tightened on Bryna's arm as she dragged her towards their house. Each step felt heavier than the last, as if weight of her stepmother's abuse had suddenly become unbearable. Bryna's mind raced, desperately searching for a way to escape the torment that awaited her at home. She couldn't bear the thought of enduring another night locked in the basement, deprived of basic necessities.

As they reached the house, Carla shoved Bryna through the front door, her voice dripping with venom. "You're lucky your father isn't here to witness your disobedience. But don't think for a second that I won't make you pay for this."
