the justification of the biblical genocide did not make sense

i have a good feeling that sum christians are gonna come into the comments and defend this take.

i remember reading sum verses abt the g3nocide against the canaanite men, women and children ordered by god in the old testament a long time ago. today, i revisited them and read an article on this topic and why it had to happen.

apparently, the kids would grow to be disbelieving pagans like their parents. background info: in the land of canaan and before the migration of abraham and his followers, the indigenous canaanites had their own religion (canaan paganism). their religion included child sacrifices and prostitution rituals which god in the scripture disliked.

b/c of that, the children and their families must be killed so the migrants' children (mind you, coming to their land from their original home) wouldn't have to get married to them and become pagans like them. and the canaanites would have resisted assimilation so they had to be killed along with their children; they are destined to die b/c they are pagans.

... i find this absurd. and sad. and gut wrenching.

sorry but these kids are innocent. they did not choose their life as canaanites. they did not choose to be sacrificed to their idols. their parents raised them as pagans. why go, thinking they will never be monotheists and kill them? they had the chance to learn abt the scripture since abraham and his people entered their land.

what's worse the writer of the article feels bad for the perpetrators when they were killing the children and their mothers! this was his EXACT PARAGRAPH:

"So whom does God wrong in commanding the destruction of the Canaanites? Not the Canaanite adults, for they were corrupt and deserving of judgement. Not the children, for they inherit eternal life. So who is wronged? Ironically, I think the most difficult part of this whole debate is the apparent wrong done to the Israeli soldiers themselves. Can you imagine what it would be like to have to break into some house and kill a terrified woman and her children? The brutalizing effect on these Israeli soldiers is disturbing."

how is a soldier a victim while committing war crimes?! and their trauma is more hEaRtBrEaKiNg than kids and their families being butchered by them??

i feel like i got stabbed in the heart reading it.

no matter how the much christians are justifying this, it will never make sense to me why it had to happen. and it will never will.
