For most of the time in the English class, I am distracted by the outside view of the playground. At the moment, there are two fifth grade classes' recess and I am tempted to go out too. But the period is not yet to be dismissed. I watch the clock, still showing twenty minutes until the end of the period. Then shifting my sight over to Ms.Florence, dressed sleek, hair properly garnered into a high, smooth bun tied by a floral cotton band, highlighting by its beige color and intricate designing. I wonder if she has scheduled to dress corresponding everyday, or, she highly prefers to shows herself that way.
I am restless in my seat. My feet are prepared long before at the beginning of the period to dash away. And my mood is hung low in the boring topic, but equally cheerful to leave this class. Every word that comes out of Ms.Florence's mouth, rises the boredom and is stricken to the bounded time with no freedom and makes the period stretch longer and longer.
At last, the period comes to an end and I am eager to go out in the hallway, like it is the most interesting place to be after this class. But I just want to get away from the class work.
Me and Julia stroll down the hallway together to the cafeteria. We haven't even reached the cafeteria yet, and the smell of hot, recently cooked chicken wafts out, spreading in the hallway due to the kids opening and closing the door. But I don't like the school chicken and have never chose anything else from the menu either. In fact, I never eat lunch in school.
This time we reach the cafeteria earlier. There is hardly anyone before us. I speed up to one of the table and Julia drags after me. She comes and sits in a seat across from me.
"How was yesterday?" Julia starts.
At first I am confused what she is talking about. So many little things happened. "What exactly?"
"Really? You forgot about it. I am talking about the doll." She says.
"Oh that." I recall. "Nothing much. But you know I washed the doll in the backyard. It began to shine."
"Didn't your mom get mad to have such dirty doll in the house? It sounds like a big thing for you."
"It absolutely is not a big deal for me. As I have repeated so many times that my mom and dad are always outside in their business work."
My mood begins to dull a little.
"So you might not have any trouble. But then what else did you do with your doll?"
It strikes me when she claims that it is my doll. I feel that now the doll would always belong to me."Umm. I took it to sleep with me and that's it." I chuckle.
Julia looks down at the table and looks back up. I notice something is disturbing in her eyes. I keep looking while the silence holds between us. Before I would speak, I want to be sure if what I am going to say will match.
Taking a last examination of her face, I ask, "It's something wrong? You don't look very happy."
She takes couple seconds to prepare her response. As just then, the whistle screams in our ears and a high strong voice of the lunch teacher, announces, "Everyone make a line quietly by the wall."
The recess time has finally arrived after kids ate their lunch. The announcement hits almost everyone to get up from their seats and as directed, they form line by one of the wall. We join in the back.
When we march outside, the cool wind blows our loose open hair. I sweep them back, and clasp them in my hand. The kids in the front hustle and bustle among their friends. Me and Julia are quiet. We watch our way to the playground.
In the playground, we saunter off to the fence and sit at the curb. The sitting spot is smaller, but our butts fix here anyway.
Julia takes a sigh and picks back on the topic." Yesterday when I came home late, mum yelled at me. She wanted me to come home before it starts to get even a little dark."
"Oh. I'm so sorry. I insisted you to come to the park." I apologize.
"Not really. You told me you wanted to stay outside and I have taken you somewhere that was closer," Julia corrects me and adds on.
I lean my elbows on my thighs and cup my face in my hands. The wind flutters crossing from us. I see other fifth graders busily playing games, laughing, running after each other teasing and while there are bunch of girls walking and doing gossip.
"You know we are not that big to go anywhere we want and your mom is a good mom." I suggest.
"I don't know." Julia says.
"You don't know what?"
"That my mom is a good mom. But she yells at me for not letting me do certain stuff."
"I don't remember my mom yelling at me." I am lost in the thought of my past life. When I am even little. I most of the time recall them as nice parents; buying me toys, spending time with me, taking me outside for fun and then we would go somewhere to eat. But as I am growing up, they give me less attention. Their love for me is slowly scraping off and being forgotten. The two pairs of eyes that would search me and be happy to see me be happy. All of that is being avoided and is going faraway beyond from anything I could meet my eyes to.
"It's because they love you." Julia put a period to the conversation and I am left still, hook back on the wall, stun.
My eyes widen and the dry air claims them.
