I lay on my side of the bed, trying to sleep, but my eyes refused to stay shut. Suddenly, soft hands grasped my biceps, and I knew exactly who it was.
"What are you doing?" I asked, turning towards her with raised eyebrows.
She gave me her signature innocent smile. "I couldn't sleep. That ghost from the movie keeps appearing in front of my eyes whenever I close them."
I chuckled, amused by her childish behavior. "Seriously, you're 25 years old, and you're talking like a 5-year-old."
She pouted, "Rian was requesting to watch the movie, so I did."
I was about to respond when someone knocked on the door. I got up to answer it, finding Rian standing there.
"What happened?" I asked him.
"Dadda, I couldn't sleep. Can I sleep here tonight?" he requested.
Before I could respond, Adarika chimed in, "Baby, come here." Rian ran towards her and snuggled between us.
I warned them, "You two are not watching horror movies again!" They both gave me their innocent smiles, as if they hadn't done anything wrong.
As we lay there, I could hear them whispering to each other, but I couldn't quite make out what they were saying. Before I could understand, they both pulled the duvet away from me.
"What the hell?" I yelled, laughing.
I turned towards them, and they were both covered under the duvet, looking like they were hiding from something. I made a mental note not to let them watch horror movies again.
I sighed, closed my eyes, and eventually drifted off to sleep.
The next morning, I woke up early, feeling refreshed. I looked beside me to find Adarika and Rian sleeping, hugging each other tightly. I smiled, feeling a sense of warmth.
After my morning walk and workout, I returned to my room, showered, and dressed in my office suit. Adarika and Rian were still fast asleep.
"Adarika, wake up," I said, trying to rouse her.
She didn't respond, nor did she move an inch. I called out to her again, "Adarika."
This time, she stirred, "Mom, please let me sleep more." She hugged Rian tightly, still half asleep.
I glared at her, amused by her response. After a few minutes, she looked up at me, gave me a sleepy smile, and then fell back asleep, saying, "Good night."
I chuckled, shook my head, and went to the washroom to fetch a mug of water. I returned to Adarika and gently poured the water over her face.
She woke up with a start, shouting, "What the hell?" She looked up at me, her eyes wide with surprise.
