The door wouldn't open. No matter how hard he tried, how hard he pulled the handle, the car door was locked from opening from the inside. It was over. Everything he had wished for with the girl he loved. Everything he had envisioned for their future together. They were supposed to be perfect, supposed to make it no matter what.
He had told Plagg that him and Marinette were forever and now... now he wasn't so sure. He was about to break her heart and didn't know if she could forgive him. There was supposed to be a solution. He thought he would find a way out of leaving.
He should have told her sooner and now it was unforgivable that he was leaving her without saying a proper goodbye. He had promised to take her to the end of year dance and now he couldn't. Worst of all she didn't even know, but he had to tell her, even if she never loved him again.
Reaching for his phone, Adrien turned it on, immediately choosing the number of his girlfriend, the love of his live, who he was definitely about to lose. He didn't deserve her anyway. He didn't deserve her love. He was a horrible boyfriend. Marinette was beautiful, smart, creative, strong, and so much more than he could ever hope to be. He was a useless, pushover, who couldn't tell his father no, because he was weak and spineless.
"A-Adrien!" Marinette's cheerful voice sounded from the phone as she answered. Her beautiful blue hair was sitting in a perfect bun atop her head. She was wearing the dress he knew she had been working on specifically for the end of year college party.
She looked stunning in white, the little pink accents around the collar of the dress, was so Marinette. Knowing she put so much into tonight and he was getting ready to ruin it, almost made him hang up the phone and put it away, but he couldn't. He wouldn't leave her out to dry.
She needed to know he wasn't going to be there. He wasn't going to hold her in his arms and dance with her. He wasn't going to have fun with their friends and enjoy some of their last moments together before lycée. The tears he had been holding back finally fell as he took in the beauty on the phone in front of him.
"Marinette, I should've told you sooner, but... up until the last minute, I thought I'd find a solution. I tried everything; I swear."
Watching her boyfriend breaking down in front of her and over the phone no less, Marinette couldn't quite understand. The dance was only an hour away and Adrien was upset about something, but why?
"Adrien, what's ... what's going on?"
"I have to leave Paris," Adrien sobs out, his voice breaking as he sees the sadness overtake Marinette's worried eyes, "I'm not worthy of your love. I feel terrible for hurting you. I'm sorry."
Unable to contain his own sadness, much less witness his loves, he ends the call causing Marinette falling to her knees as her heart begins to ache. There was only an hour before the dance and Adrien couldn't come. He was being shipped off to Paris. His father's idea for sure and it sucked. They had been looking forward to it so much but, with Gabriel as his father, it wasn't surprising.
What was surprising though, was the pain in the gorgeous green eyes she could see through the phone. The tear tracks running down his cheeks, and the deep furrow of his brow. Adrien was hurting... he was really, really hurting and missing one dance, even the end of the year dance shouldn't cause the pain emitting from the boy she loved.
She knew how difficult it was for Adrien to stand up to his father. She couldn't fault him for that, but she made him a promise. She made him a promise that she was going to keep. No matter why Adrien was leaving, it was obvious he didn't want to go.
She had promised not to give up on him and Marinette Dupain-Cheng was no liar. She loved Adrien will all her heart and if he doesn't feel like he deserves her love, she was going to prove him wrong.
