Chapter thirty six
"You guys need me."
Still standing there, Conrad was still looking at Diana, wanting nothing more but to go over there and hug her and never let her go "so this is why you haven't answered any of my phone calls and texts?" Jeremiah asked, turning Conrad's attention back to him "Jere. Jere. Did you not hear what I just said? We're going to lose this house. Mom's house." Conrad shared "but..but I thought your dad understood what this house meant to all of us. Why would he sell it?" Diana asked him, furrowing her brows.
"He's not. Our aunt Julia is." Conrad shared "aunt Julia? Susannah's sister?" Diana asked, as Conrad looked to her "half sister. Apparently, the house belonged to both of them. And then when mom.." he shared, looking back at Jeremiah "now aunt Julia owns the whole thing, so.." he added on "okay, we'll just call dad and figure something out. That's it." Jeremiah shared "you think I haven't already done that? He says legally the house is hers." Conrad shared "okay, then he'll buy it." Jeremiah shared.
"He doesn't have the money to buy it. Between Brown and the medical bills and.." Conrad shared "yeah, I know how much the medical bills cost because I was there. How long did you know about this and not tell me?" Jeremiah asked, and when he did, Diana stepped forward "guys.." she told them "Jere, this was all happening so fast. I was going to tell you after I'd taken care of it." Conrad shared, as Jeremiah chuckled "and this is you taking care of it? Going AWOL, ditching school, not talking to us." he shared "fuck school! I don't care!" Conrad voiced.
"Connie, you have to go back or you'll fail your class." Jeremiah told him "guys!" Diana voiced, and when she did, Conrad and Jeremiah looked to her, as Diana let out a breath "how about you both stop screaming at each other?" she asked "Diana.." Conrad told her, closing his eyes "seriously?" Jeremiah asked, as Conrad opened his eyes looking at him, Jeremiah held his arm out to Diana "we went to Brown to check on your ass. You know what? I didn't think you'd pull this shit again. But you don't give a shit about anyone but yourself." Jeremiah shared "Jeremiah.." Diana told him, as Jeremiah turned walking out of the living room and down the hallway, heading out the front door.
And as he did, Conrad turned around, putting his hands on the mantle, Diana walked up to him and hugged him from behind "I'm sorry about the house." she told him "well at least somebody cares." Conrad shared "yes, he does. Believe me, the moment he heard about you running off to cousins and ditching school, he was so scared that I had come up with a fake story about you becoming a ladies man to get his mind off of all the terrible things he thought might've happened to you. And he wasn't the only one, seeing as you went radio silent on me weeks ago." Diana shared.
As Conrad let out a breath, knowing ever since prom and then the funeral, the two were all each other had, and he by not texting her back had screwed that all up to "I got a call two days ago. From Liam. He was asking me about a, for sale, sign in our front yard. I thought it was a misunderstanding, so I drove straight here. I pulled the stupid sign out of the ground, and I threw it in the garbage. Seeing that sign was like losing all over again, and I didn't want that for Jere. I'm going to use my trust as down payment for the house. Talking to my mom's financial guys in the morning. I didn't mean to worry anybody. I'm handling things. You guys can go." he shared.
"Yeah, well, once Jeremiah cools off from knowing that your not actually dead, then I know once he realizes what's happening with the house that he's not gonna wanna leave either and that's his choice. Not yours." Diana shared, unlinking her arms from him, she turned around walking out of there, and instead of going outside, she headed upstairs, walking down the hallway, and instead of into her bedroom, she headed into Jeremiah's and over to his dresser, pulling out the sheets and blankets for the bed, she turned around and began making it.
