Rainy night

This happens somewhere between The Titan's Curse and the Battle Of The Labyrinth books

Percy's pov:

I was sleeping when I heard a noise. At first I thought it was the start of a nighmare, but then I opened my eyes and the noise was still there. I realised that it's like two in the morning and that there is someone standing outside my window. I grab Riptide and the person in question manages to open my window and break into my room. I quickly placed Riptide in my nightstand when I realise that the person is Annabeth.

"Are you okay?" I ask.

She looks at me. What a stupid question. She is gasping for air, soaked in rain water and she is clearly injured. Not even a minute later something unexpected happens. Annabeth started crying.

"I'm sorry, Percy. I shoudn't have come here in the first place, I..."

"No, it's okay, just... can you tell me what happened for you to end up here?"

"I had a stupid fight with my dad because he's constantly defending his wife without even listening to me! She convinced my own father, the only family that I have left, that my presence in her house is a danger to their kids. What am I, a stranger?! I know how to stand up for myself and everytime I go back home I barely sleep every night just to make sure that no monster gets close to them. And what do they do? They do not care! In fact, they never really cared about me, because my dear stepmom thinks that I'm the monster and the bad guy of the story, even though I'm not. And so I came here... because I have nowhere else to go."

She takes a deep breath, looks at me and cries even more, while spreading her arms to each sides of her body. I hug her.

"I care about you. And I have never seen you as a bad person. You're actually one of the most amazing people I have ever met and certainly the smartest. You know, I'm always here if you need a helping hand, even though you hate asking for help. You can't keep everything to yourself, Wise Girl."

After that she calmed down a little, but remained silent. I went to get the first aid kit so that I could help her take care of her injures and then she fell asleep in my bed. We both agreed that she should stay overnight and that we would explain everything to my mom in the morning. So, I head to the living room and lay in the couch with my head in my pillow and a blanket over me. The last thing I remember was falling asleep while staring at the ceiling.

I woke up around 7am with my mom gently shaking me:

"Percy, what are you doing here? Why are you sleeping in the couch? Did you have another nightmare?"

"No, it's not that, I... Listen, mom, there's something you need to know."

"I'm all ears." she says while sitting next to me.

You know Annabeth, right...?

She looks at me as if I am going insane. Wow, I made a stupid question again, what a surprise!

"Yes, of course I know Annabeth. What about her?"

"She is in my room, like... right now."

"Why is that?"

"It's a long story, okay mom? I'm sorry that I didn't tell you when she got here, I just didn't want to wake you up and..."

"Percy?"

"Yes...?"

"I'm not mad at you, I just want to know why."

"Alright, then... you probably would want to talk to both of us, because I know the majority of the events, but not everything."

"Okay, then let's go to your bedroom."

"Okay..."

I knocked in my own bedroom door, which is something I had never done before, and after I heard Annabeth saying "come in" I opened the door and got into the room with my mom. Annabeth doesn't seem surprised. She's sitting in my desk's chair, so me and my mom sit in the bed after Annabeth turned the chair backwards to face us.

"Hello, Annabeth." my mom says calmly.

"Hey, Sally... I'm sorry for coming without warning you, but it was too late and I nowhere safe to stay overnight. At least not a place that was close enough for me to get there, and..."

"Annabeth."

"Yes, Sally...?"

"How are you feeling, my dear?"

After making that question, my mom placed her hand in Annabeth's shoulder and that was enough for her to breakdown. Honestly, I'm extremely surprised that Annabeth was capable of suppress all these feelings inside of her for so long. Not because I think she's weak though, because she's in fact really strong. But because she didn't talk to anyone about them. Luke joined Kronos' army, Grover is in the wilderness and Thalia became a huntress. I'm not sure if she talks to her father or her stepmom about it, but I highly doubt she does.

Then I suddenly realise that I was overthinking so much that I ended up getting distracted from what was happening. Annabeth is crying, my mom is hugging her and I feel like someone just stabbed me in my heart in cold blood, because Annabeth doesn't deserve all of this suffering. Everytime I see her crying I feel so worthless, because I don't know what to do to make her feel better. I ended up joining the hug, since I figured that's the best I could do.

After telling the whole story to my mom, we all decided that my mom should call Annabeth's dad to let him know that she's okay and that she chose to stay with us for a while until she's ready to come home.

Then all the three of us went to the kitchen together and made breakfast. Blue pancakes, of course. My personal favourite. During the process of making the pancakes I managed to make Annabeth laugh a couple of times, which made my day much better than it was before.
