★one | but i’ll just let you live.
THE BELL OF decelis high rang through the halls, indicating the end of what many considered a torturous session of Mrs. Lee's math class. the hum of exiting students filled the air, their conversations a vibrant mix of the day's trivialities and dramas - lunch plans, the good looks of Mr. Min, impending doom of the science test, and the latest singer they fell in love with.
however, the the most common topic was the unexpected breakup of the 12th-grade sweethearts, Heedo and Jinho. their love story had been a staple of schoolyard chatter, their adoration for one another almost enviable. no one felt their separation more than Nishimura Sayori though. after all, she had been the one to get them together in the first place.
Sayori sighed as she gazed out the window, her head resting on her shoulders. her melancholy as palpable to anyone who happened to pass by, and they likely understood why.
the sound of a board being wiped echoed around the almost-empty classroom, punctuated by the thump of the duster being set on a desk.
the screeching chair in front of Sayori signaled someone's arrival. the person started to poke her arm continuously, finding fun in annoying her friend.
ignoring the constant prodding, Sayori nestled into her arms and let out a muffled scream, eliciting a mischievous giggle from her friend.
“why so gloomy, Ri?” Sooyun teased, tilting her head in an effort to meet Sayori’s eyes.
“I think you know why,” Sayori retorted, arms folded. to an onlooker, the two best friends might have appeared as a worn-out mother and a petulant child. but neither of them cared.
Park sooyun and Nishimura Sayori’s friendship went far, way far. they were practically inseparable from infancy, one could even say that they were diaper buddies. Sayori was the one who broke Sooyun out of her shell in third grade, Sooyun was the one who persuaded Sayori to stop putting others before herself. it was a well-balanced 50/50 relationship.
their bond was the envy of many. it's rare to find someone who you know will stick by you through thick and thin. Sayori trusted Sooyun with her life, and the feeling was mutual.
“first, Dan-oh and Sangjin. Now Heedo and Jinho.” Sayori thumped her head on the table, causing Sooyun to wince.
teasing is part of any good friendship, and Sooyun was an expert. but she knew when to stop, and that time had come.
“Another one? In the span of two weeks too?” Sooyun asked, baffled. now she knew how close the Nishimura held the couples she got together to her heart. most of the time, she was there to witness it.
Nishimura Sayori was a hopeless romantic, the girl herself would be the first to admit so. it was her romantic nature that led a thirteen-year-old Sayori to play matchmaker for two smitten individuals too scared to confess their feelings. that’s where her journey as Danwon’s cupid started. it was a hobby at first, she insisted it was. but somewhere along the way it eventually turned into an emotional crutch, a slightly unhealthy form of escapism.
