Whispers in the Dark (1)

When my mom informed me that her friend, whom we were visiting today, had two sons, my curiosity was piqued, and my imagination began to run wild. As I sat on the train, I found myself daydreaming about them, creating scenarios in my head. Upon arriving at their house, the boys weren't home, so I busied myself unpacking.

Later, I went to the bathroom for a wash, and that's when I heard two male voices—Shona aunty's sons. My heart raced as I imagined meeting them. I felt an inexplicable connection to one of the voices. After my bath, I realized I had forgotten to bring my clothes, so I wrapped myself in a towel and made my way to the guest room.

As I was fumbling in the dim room, searching for the light switch, I heard a voice behind me call out, "Brohh, Samazi!" Suddenly, a boy—a tall, handsome boy—burst into the room. He must have thought I was his little cousin. For a moment, we stood frozen, staring at each other in the dark, just inches apart. Panic and excitement surged through me.

"This isn't Samazi," he muttered to himself, turning away. Embarrassed, I asked, "Where's the light switch?" Just then, Shona aunty appeared, laughing. "This is not her, I fooled you! Leave Samazi alone, will you?" She must have sensed some ongoing sibling squabble.

Ignoring his mom's words, he pointed to the switch, "Ah, the light switch..." His mom flipped it on, and he quickly exited the room without another word. I thanked aunty, who left with a knowing smile, leaving me alone to catch my breath. I couldn't help but feel a thrill of excitement.

After changing, I joined everyone in the living room. My brother, father, mother, Shona aunty, her husband he was so funny and her elder son he is a verry caring brother, and finally, her younger son were all gathered there. As I entered, all eyes turned to me. The younger son glanced at me briefly before looking away, but I was certain he felt something in that fleeting moment, just as I did..
