We searched for Rian everywhere, but he was nowhere to be found. I was frantic, crying uncontrollably. Nandini tried to console me, saying it wasn't my fault, but I knew I was to blame. I should have kept a closer eye on him.
Just as Revansh strode toward me, his face dark with anger, a cheerful little laugh rang out in the distance. We all froze, instantly recognizing Rian’s giggle. Without wasting a second, we followed the sound.
There he was sitting cross-legged near a balloon stall, surrounded by other kids, happily blowing soap bubbles with a vendor, his face glowing with delight. My heart clenched half with relief, half with frustration.
“Rian!” I called out, breathless. He looked up, wide-eyed and innocent, then waved at us as if nothing had happened. “Mommy, look! Bubbles!” he said, grinning ear to ear.
Revansh was beside him in two long strides. He scooped Rian up, holding him tight, but his jaw was clenched, and his eyes burned with suppressed fury. “Dadda! Did you see? I made the biggest bubble!” Rian chirped, hugging him back, completely unaware of the storm he had caused.
Bhabhi sighed in relief, asking gently, “Beta, why did you wander off like that?”
Rian pouted, replying, “Everyone was busy… so I thought I’d just play for a little while.”
Revansh didn’t say a word. He kissed Rian’s head, then turned sharply, carrying him straight to the car. I followed silently, guilt pressing heavy on my chest.
At the car door, his deep, cold voice finally broke the silence. “Get in, Adarika.”
The drive back was thick with tension. Rian, exhausted from all the excitement, soon dozed off on his father’s shoulder, still clutching a half-deflated balloon. I sat quietly, stealing glances at Revansh’s rigid profile. His anger was clear but beneath it, I could see the fear of almost losing his son.
When we arrived, Hs got out of the car, closing the door firmly behind him. He went inside without letting me near Rian or talk to him. The elders were gathered in the hall, their faces somber. Revansh went straight upstairs to Rian's room.
