Gordon's POV
It was now my bedtime, and I retired for the night. But before I could settle in, I heard more cries, like the ones I heard before.
"Dad, stop! You don't have to do this!"
Then, it slowly dawned on me. Maybe that woman was right. This mansion is haunted by that girl that died. Trying to connect the dots, a ghostly figure appeared right before my very eyes. My mouth was poked out as wide as my eyes were open like a stubborn window that refused to close.
"Who are you?" The specter asked, shakily.
"I could be asking you the same thing!" Gordon stammered.
"What are you doing in my home?" She demanded.
"It's my home now!" I said. "Aren't you that girl that died?"
"Yes I am," she replied. I'm Dorothy Winston."
"I'm Gordon Mavis, and I just moved here from Maine."
"Why did it have to be like this?" Dorothy asked. "Why do I have to walk the earth in this state? I didn't deserve this. My dad took my life away. A life I will never get back. Must I walk forever in limbo?"
"This is all so confusing to me!" I said. "Why did your dad shoot you?"
"I was a mistake," Dorothy choked on some sobs. "He didn't want me. My mother didn't want me. Nobody wanted me. Now I roam the earth in such disarray. I didn't cause any harm to anyone. My life ended with a bullet."
"You poor misunderstood soul," I said, empathetically. "You didn't seem like a horrible person. You were just a sweet, innocent little girl that wouldn't spark any trouble. I totally feel your pain."
"At least someone understands," said Dorothy, sniffing.
"May I ask how old you are?" I inquired.
"I was only seven when my dad shot me."
"You had your whole life ahead of you," I said, shaking my head. "How can someone take your life away so soon? Seven is too young to go. You could have lived a long life, finding a boyfriend, getting married, and have kids of your own. But you're now a part of the ghost realm."
"And no parents that would ever love me," said Dorothy.
"I'm sorry if I moved into your home. I should have listened to that woman. I'm such a fool. You're probably rolling in your grave right now."
"No, it's okay," said Dorothy, in a soft voice. "As a matter of fact, I get lonely a lot. I might be a ghost, but I do need someone to keep me company."
"Looks like that's me," I chuckled. "It's nice to meet you, Dorothy."
"Nice to meet you too, Gordon."
"This is gonna be the start of a wonderful friendship!" I beamed.
"I love you, Dad!"
"What? Did you just call me Dad?"
