REGAN'S POV
I must have ran out of luck because as soon as I took off, a mass that felt like it weighed a hundred pounds collapsed onto me, almost confiscating my ability to breathe. Amidst attempting to move my body underneath the heaviness, by accident, we were pushed further into the woods and rolled around until we came to a halt. I could smell the wolf, a manly musk that befuddled me with its uncanny familiarity and I could not put my finger on it. As the wolf, now apparently a male, atop me was still recovering from the chaos, I seized the opportunity to squeeze underneath the figure and put a wide distance between us.
He did not seem to appreciate the kind gesture when he bared his teeth and snarled at me. His ears flicked upwards and his body took a domineering position, in a futile try at intimidating me. It was apparent from his facial expression that he did not want to drastically harm me if I was willing to cooperate. Ha, I was a rogue, I was not going down without a fight. What began as a one-sided party quickly escalated into a stare-down but I was running low on patience and my mood had faced better times.
I hesitantly advanced forward and let my body rise so that it tricked him into thinking I was larger than he was. I thought, he possessed a strong figure that could tower over me any day, so before he could react, I should use my speed to claw at him, and I did exactly that. However, I was taken aback and remorsefully impressed as he dodged my attack swiftly but did not counter-attack, and this fluid action proved that he had equal, if not more experience in fighting. Figures. As soon as our bodies were close enough, I kept my guard fully erected due to the need to limit risks with the amount of exercise I've been doing.
I breathed in and tried to capture his scent, the same endearing musk that had appealed to me before hand, the one that so vividly initiated 'mate'. With this thought, my hairs stood in fury and my skin tickled with heat. The last thing I wanted was a mate, although I was not able to confirm his fate in my life, I had to reduce any chances of there ever being a difficulty.
There was a howl or two in the distance. Now with utmost drive, anger fuelling my muscles and rage seeping through my bones, I lunged at him and bit down on the side of his neck. We were almost on par in terms of strength and speed, so he did not falter in self-defense either. As I attacked, he responded with a counter-attack, and this cycle repeated until I grew tired and lethargy was starting to catch up on me. However, I did not stop showing off my fangs and growling at him. My energy may have had subsided, but the feelings were nowhere near relented.
Almost as if it had been scripted, two wolves began stalking into the scene, one from the left, this one I recognised as the Beta, Elfian, and another from the right, I was practically cornered. They shifted and stood by the one in the middle, still remaining in wolf form as a sign that he was not backing down anytime soon. They all eyed me as if I was an exhibit.
"This is the rogue that had trespassed!" Elfian exclaimed to no one in particular almost too audibly that it bounced off of the surroundings. With this statement, the wolf jerked his head toward the left and glared at him intently as if daring the other to go on.
"He does not deserve any mercy." The man on the right, almost similar in appearance and assertion as Elfian, started. The ignorant assumption seemed to have ticked the wolf off as he grumbled a deep growl from his throat that was loud enough to have been heard on my side. If it was me in the position of that man, I would have cowered in fear from just the dominant aura that he carried and the fearsome tone in his voice. Much less, his size compared to the other.
"He is just a rogue, he trespassed into our territory which on its own is a punishable offence. On top of it, he will be a threat if we let him go scott-free!" With his head slightly lower, the man tried again with a strong but softer tone.
"Maybe big boss here just wants to make him his play toy." Eflian snickered and looked at my facial expression change, from his I knew that he had planned it as a joke.
The wolf's face remained void of expression and his body remained the same posture. After what felt like a minute or two of silence, with the most composure I had seen in someone, "Go." He did not yell, he did not whisper, he did not exclaim. He only said. In wolf form. As expected, they did not get the message.
"Why, -" The man was cut short when he said it louder, "Go!" This time, the stronger authority seemed to register in their minds and transcended into their actions as they took several steps backwards and I heard the sound of bones cracking and light groaning when they shifted and scurried away.
The whole time, his eyes were plastered on me as if wanting to track my every move in case I dashed. The intimidation of his words still lingered in the air around us, but I could not stand being around this ignorant entity's presence anymore.
Since we were of enough proximity, I made an effort to jump into telepathic communication.
"What do you want, exactly? Do you really think I need you to look after me?" I lifted my paw to turn around and walk away. From the earlier conversation, I had assumed he did not plan on killing me so there was no point in sticking around. This was end game, I was done with this play. In the same instance, the wolf advanced towards me with the same speed he portrayed in the fight, and to my amusement, licked my chin. He did not claw at me, he did not growl at me. He lapped his tongue on my chin like he wanted to comfort me.
Confusion was now swarming me as assumptions about the 'mate' crisis started to bombard me once again. It was ludicrous how quickly he shifted his mood from hostile and domineering to comforting and gentle? I almost audibly scoffed at this strange wolf. Must have had some sort of disorder.
"What the hell are you doing? My self esteem is so insulted right now?" The wolf before me just let out a deep breath. He was trying to maintain his facade and it was getting on my nerves.
"What is your problem? You want me to talk to you, but you just sigh?" Now I did scoff at him.
"What's your name?" Finally, a response, I thought.
"You don't need to know." I was ready to take off and leave this matter but our bodies were now touching and he prevented me from doing so. Instinctively, I clawed at his face. His steps faltered and his body was shaking backwards when I seemed to have taken him off-guard.
Now I can go back home.
