Awkward Conversations

After everyone including a few people from other periods were in room 203 the planning began and so did a silent call with Chanel.

On the way to the room I texted Chanel that I got on committee and that we were about to start planning, where she proposed the idea that I just call while she's on mute so she could write down what their potential ideas were and how we could counter them.

Evergreen hasn't announced who was on committee yet, but Chanel and Myles have been working overtime to get on the principals good side so he can let the three of us do it.

It's been almost ten minutes since the meeting started and the majority of the ideas were based around what Evergreen has done in the previous years and how to one up them.

This place really was weird.

"Cairo do you have any ideas?" The teacher suddenly asked out of nowhere.

And almost immediately all eyes were on me.

"Uhh— I was thinking maybe, bounce houses...?" I trailed off saying the first thing that came to mind.

She nodded a few times, "Not a bad idea," she said writing it on the board.

It definitely was a bad idea.

After nearly twenty minutes of brainstorming the teacher said it's up to us on what ideas should be officialized and which ones scrapped.

"I'm going to leave it up to you guys to be in your element, don't want to disturb great minds at work, if you do need me please call me. Oh and to receive the credits for participating you need at least forty hours of this club, so I recommend you stay a little past four to make the most, bye everyone." she said waving us all goodbye.

As soon as she exited the room the other students that were chosen immediately stood up before walking out right behind her.

"I think it's time I go too," Milo said, rising from his chair.

"Yeah gotta check on my dying grandma hopefully I end up in her will," Roy said, slinging his bag on his back before following behind Milo.

"We're going to the club, want to come?" Pearl asked me.

I shook my head, "I have to get ready to leave tomorrow so I can't be out late," I pointed out.

Time to put my lie in motion.

"Where are you going?" she questioned.

"Paris for a shoot, I should be back by next monday though," I explained.

And I swear it looked like something cracked inside of her.

"That's wonderful," she said with a smile, "Cover for us until four if she asks, say we went to the vending machines or something and show pictures when you get back from Paris." she said before exiting the room entirely with her friends shortly following after.

All except one.

Corey.

If it wasn't awkward then, it was definitely awkward now.

I sat there weirdly playing with my thumbs before glancing down at my phone to notice Chanel hung up the call.

I should really just leave.

But if the teacher comes back to find that everyone is gone then I could get kicked off of the team, which was the whole purpose of me doing all this.

I sucked it up, deciding to break the tense silence.

"Thanks for the party..." I trailed off, my voice barely above a whisper.

"It's no problem." she replied flatly.

And I feel like this is the first time I actually clearly heard her voice, I mean the party last night had the music and chatter drowning out her voice.

But now that I can properly hear her— her voice sounded smooth?

I don't know it was sort of deep but like a smooth deep.

Like a... radio show host?

Wait no that can't be right maybe...

And after suddenly halting my extremely over analytic thoughts I realized that was the only conversation starter I had whipped up...

I cleared my throat, trying to recover from the fifteen seconds silence I accidentally put between us, "You seem like the quietest out of all of them," I pointed out hoping to get another conversation started with her.

If I was able to get on her good side then I'm sure she'd have dirt on Pearl.

She blankly hummed, causing a silence to wash over us once more.

I have to leave after that one, I can't possibly sit here and embarrass myself anymore.

Just as I gained the courage to push out my chair she spoke. "You have family out here?" she questioned, causing me to halt my actions.

It was like my brain short circuited for a second.

I quickly nodded, "Yeah my parents live here, I've been here since I was a child it's only recently I've been gone," I replied, this wasn't on script but I felt like I didn't have to necessarily lie.

Only the last part was somewhat false.

She nodded a few times, "What do you do exactly?" she questioned.

Okay now all of this would be false.

I thought we were off to a great start.

"I model, majority of my shoots require me to go overseas or out of town, hence me leaving for a few days," I briefly explained hoping that I got what Chanel told me correct.

I have to admit they made up a pretty good lie, or alter ego?

"That's cool," she replied blankly.

And I somehow felt like the whole conversation we built was tore back to the ground.

"If never seen you here before," she pointed out, and I already knew what she was hinting at.

Why I've decided to come my senior year while I have to fly across the world. "I was told that I had to take some physical classes rather than online to get some credits, so here I am," I said with a slight smile.

She nodded a few times before glancing around the room.

I guess that's signaling that whatever we had just happen was over.

And although she seemed the most genuine out of all of them— I still had a feeling like something was missing.

Like she didn't trust me or something.

It was really subtle and hard to pick up on but I could tell from her responses.

And if I couldn't get her to trust me, then the other half of this idea is down the drain so I had to come up with something quick before it did.

Eventually the clock struck four and we were letting the teacher know that everyone was leaving even though they'd all left almost an hour ago.

I had to gain her trust somehow.

But something tells me that this would be harder than I anticipated.

And I don't want to get my feelings hurt.
