Chapter 24: Meetings

Mariah was awoken to the sound of footsteps walking past her foxhole. She popped her head out and saw Eugene walking by.

"Hey!" She yelled. Eugene quickly turned around. "Wait for me!" Mariah looked over and saw a sleeping, Joe. She smiled and gave him quick kiss on the head then climbed out of her foxhole.

"Where you going this early in the morning?" Mariah asked.

"Goin for a walk, and i'm guessin you're comin with me?"

"You'd be right about that." Mariah smiled.

As Eugene and Mariah were walking a plane engine roared overhead. From behind the men started running towards the noise, once they realized it was planes the sound of cheering began.

From behind Mariah felt arms wrap around her waist; it was Joe, "I think this is a good sign." He said, kissing her on the temple. Mariah laughed and grabbed his head, they continued forward. Everyone's happiness was cut short however when the sound of explosions echoed through the air.

"GET BACK IN THE TREES! TAKE COVER!"

Once covered, most of the men began shooting at the planes. "CEASEFIRE, CEASEFIRE!" Lipton yelled.

The sound of more planes filled the air. "C-47's, they're bringing supplies, it's a drop. "IT'S A DROP! LET'S GO!" Lipton yelled.

Rebecca and Renee were tending to soldiers when they heard the roar of planes. Both women ran outside. From above packages attached to small parachutes started falling from the sky. "We finally have supplies." Rebecca said, smiling.

Renee hugged Rebecca; she wasn't expecting it. She smiled and hugged the nurse back.

"Roe, Mariah, Liebgott, Lipton, take the jeep into town, grab supplies." Winters said.

All four jumped into the Jeep. Lipton smacked the side of the Jeep and it lurched forwards.

"I FINALLY GET TO MEET YOUR SISTER!" Joe yelled.

"YES, YOU DO!" Mariah yelled back.

The truck stopped in front of the church door, Mariah and Eugene ran into the church while the rest of the men scoped out the town.

When they entered the basement Renee was standing close to the stairs. "Hi Renee, we're here to get some supplies. Where would they be?" Mariah asked.

"Back room."

"Thank you." Eugene said nodding his head. As the pair made their way to the room. Mariah couldn't help but notice Eugene kept turning his head back to look at Renee. "Hey," Mariah said, turning to face Eugene. "I can handle this, why don't you go talk to Renee."

Eugene's eyes widened. "I-no, no. You can't carry those 4 boxes to the truck on your own."

Mariah chuckled. "I'm sure I could rope Rebecca into helping me."

"You could rope me into doing what?" Rebecca asked, coming up behind her sister.

"Oh, you were going to help me bring some crates to the truck so Eugene could talk to Renee."

Rebecca grinned. "I can absolutely do that." Eugene rolled his eyes but walked away.

Mariah and Rebecca smiled before turning around to the packages. "She's been asking about him." Rebecca said.

Mariah turned her head and raised her eyebrows. "Oh, has she now? What has she said?"

"She asked about you two, if either of you were interested in the other, I said no. She seemed pleased about that. After the first time he came here she told me she thought he was handsome."

Mariah raised her eyebrows and smiled. "Oh, she likes him."

"My thought's exactly."

Mariah chuckled as both girls put their boxes into the back of the truck. As Mariah turned to face her sister, she saw Joe and the rest of the men walking towards the church. JOE!" Mariah yelled. "COME OVER HERE, I'D LIKE TO INTRODUCE YOU TO SOMEONE."

Rebecca smirked, "I finally get to meet the boyfriend. How should I intimidate him?"

Mariah shook her head and laughed. She heard gravel crunching under heavy boots and turned her head. "Joe, I'd like you meet my sister, Rebecca."

Joe held his hand out. "Nice to meet you."

Rebecca took his hand in hers, shook it and nodded her head. "So, Joe, you keeping this one safe?"

Joe chuckled. "I'm trying to but she doesn't listen to me."

"Yeah, she's notorious for that." Rebecca said, putting her arm around her sister's shoulders.

"Hey! I listen."

"You must've just learned that." Joe joked.

"I did not introduce you two so that you could make fun of me!" Mariah yelled.

"Well, I think I'll be going away in a minute, Renee's coming this way." Mariah turned her head to see the nurse coming toward the three.

"Rebecca, we need you back."

"I'll be there in a second." Rebecca yelled. "I'll see you soon?"

Mariah nodded. "Of course."

Rebecca smiled and hugged her sister. "I love you."

"I love you too."
