"Isn't this great, Halle? New school, new neighborhood, new people! It'll be amazing!" My mom carried on. She was so excited for our move from Portland, Oregon, to Grey's Wind, a place just outside of Everett, Washington. It's a small town, so small that many map companies don't have it on their maps.
"Yeah, Mom, it's great." I replied halfheartedly. "After I bring this box in, can I stretch out? I've been stuck in that car for so long and I need to make sure blood gets everywhere."
"Yes, Halle, you can stretch out when you bring that box in, but be sure to come back at five, that's when dinner is."
I mentally high-fived myself for that little win, and ran inside with the box and dropped it off in my room, or where my room would be. I was so happy to find that there was a bay window, and opened it. I took a deep breath and smelled the air, excited to feel my wings in it. I hurriedly jumped out the window and my pure, white wings fanned out behind me and a smile played on my face.
The feeling of the rain-scented air beneath my wings was indescribable. It was like when you run your fingers through your hair, only more powerful, and stronger. It felt graceful, it felt like there was no end to your life, and that there was no ending to anything
I flew for a couple miles, enjoying the scenery that was provided. Grey clouds started to form just feet above my head. I reached up to touch one, and my hand came back cold and wet. I coasted down toward the ground and saw a small clearing between two large, pine trees.
I landed on the ground for a few minutes, catching the breath that I lost from flying. The way the pine and the rain mixed turned to this smell that was amazing. Febreeze or Glade won't be able to copy that exact scent, and the strange comfort it brought me.
"I've never seen you around here before." A sudden voice shocked me. I retracted my wings in fear and turned to look at this person. "No need to retract your wings, I got 'em too." This person, which is a he, said, then flaunting his wings behind him. They weren't as big or as feathery as mine, but instead sleek and compact, much like my father's before he passed. His wings retracted and it looked like they weren't even there. He could fly faster than me, that was a fact in itself.
"My name is Vincent Hailen." He put his hand out to shake. I took up on his offer.
"Halle Maylore." I replied, taking in all of his features.
Vince had a strong jawline with a little bit of stubble growing through, and pale skin. His white wings contrasted with the black leather jacket he was wearing, as well as the black Chuck Taylor's and black skinny jeans. His blonde hair had the same effect. The lip ring in his pale lips looked like it was constantly tugged on. And his eyes. They were this deep, and bright blue color with a flecks of silver at the edges.
Hey, I had a thing for noticing small details.
"So, why are you in the woods?" Vincent asked.
"I just moved here and I was stuck in the car for a while, and I needed the bloodflow." I stated, and put my hands on my hips and looked at him.
"Do you live in Grey's Wind now?"
"Yeah, why?" I asked, slowly backing away from him, in fear that he would stalk me.
"Well, I figured we could fly back there, together, because I live there too?" His statement was more like a question. He bit his lip ring and rubbed the back of his neck.
If this was some weird way for Angels to flirt, he was doing a terrible job at it. He looked hot while doing it, so I had no problem with his terrible flirting.
"Sure, why not?" I told him as my wings spread out behind me. I was slowly lifted higher and higher, while Vincent was still on the ground. He followed up behind me and we flew together at a slow speed, getting to know each other as the miles passed by.
Vincent had a sister, Johanna, and was a year older than her. He lived with his parents before they were killed by Demons two years ago, and that was when he moved to Grey's Wind. He now lives with a cousin his father had, who was the closest relative who was an Angel. The cousin's name is Jackson.
I told him about myself, like I used to live in Sacramento, and how my father was killed by a Demon when I was six. Then, I received a letter in the mail about getting excepted into the Esmund School for Gifted Children. My mother was so proud that I got into a gifted school, knowing that I kept focus on school even when my father was gone.
"That's an Angel school, and it's told that us who go there are hand picked by Gabriel, the Angel who told Virgin Mary about her son, Jesus." Vincent said. After he said that we flew over my new house.
"Holy shit." Was all I managed to say before I flew down and landed. I was standing on my roof when Vincent flew away, and gave me a wave goodbye.
"You shouldn't say that you know! You are an Angel!" Vincent chuckled, flying in the direction we came from. We must've past his house on the way back.
I entered the bay window and stood in my empty room. The quiet sort of soothed me, but not entirely.
I walked down the stairs and found my mother on the phone. "What do you mean 'we are out of cheese?' You're a pizza place for crying out loud! What kind of pizza place runs out of cheese?" She shouted and it was actually very funny to see her face all scrunched up and everything.
She saw me standing in the hallway when she hung up the phone. "Hey sweetie, how was your flight?" Mom asked.
"Good, there's another Angel here." I said, and my mother might've squealed.
"Tell me all about her."
"Well, he has blonde hair, blue eyes, and his name is Vincent. He's really nice, and he has a sister named Johanna." I said. "She's an Angel too. Vince said there were more Angels here, but I'm not exactly sure how many are here."
"Well, I'll order Chinese food, and we'll set up a few rooms and get settled. You're first day of school is tomorrow!" Mom shouted before walking toward the 'kitchen.' to order the food.
After Mom ordered the food, we started unpacking boxes. Rugs, chairs, pillows, tables, blankets, really anything you'll find in a family room is what we opened first. We set up most of the things we unpacked, and turned up the music I had on my phone.
It was a nice time with my Mom, joking around and dancing while setting the room.
If only Dad was here too.
