Alexis awoke to the soft light of dawn streaming through the window, casting a warm glow over the room. He stretched, feeling the lingering effects of the long journey and the emotional exhaustion of recent events. But today was a new day, and Snowmass Village felt like a place where he could find solace and perhaps even a new beginning.

He got dressed and headed downstairs, the aroma of freshly brewed coffee guiding him to the kitchen. Aunt Jane was already there, bustling around in an apron and humming a cheerful tune.

"Good morning, Alexis!" she greeted him with a bright smile. "I hope you slept well. I've made some breakfast. Come, sit."

Alexis took a seat at the wooden kitchen table, which was set with plates of pancakes, eggs, and bacon. He hadn't realized how hungry he was until now.

"Thanks, Aunt Jane. This looks amazing," he said, grabbing a fork.

"I'm glad you like it. We've got a big day ahead. I thought I'd show you around the village properly and introduce you to a few more people," Jane said, pouring him a cup of coffee.

"That sounds great," Alexis replied between bites. "I'd like to get to know the place better."

After breakfast, Jane and Alexis bundled up and stepped out into the crisp morning air. The village was just beginning to wake up, with shopkeepers opening their stores and children heading off to school. The snow crunched under their feet as they walked down the main street.

Their first stop was the general store. As they entered, a bell above the door jingled, and Mr. Thompson looked up from behind the counter.

"Morning, Jane! And you must be Alexis," he said, extending a hand. "Welcome to Snowmass Village."

"Thanks, Mr. Thompson. It's nice to meet you," Alexis replied, shaking his hand.

"Call me Tom. Everyone does," Mr. Thompson said with a grin. "If you need anything, you just let me know. We've got the best selection of groceries and supplies in town."

Jane chuckled. "Tom's modesty aside, he's right. This store is the heart of the village. Now, let's head over to Clara's coffee shop."

As they made their way down the street, Jane pointed out various buildings and landmarks, sharing bits of village history along the way. Alexis found himself intrigued by the stories and the sense of community that seemed to permeate the place.

The coffee shop, named "Mountain Brews," was a cozy little establishment with large windows and a warm interior. Clara, the barista they had met the day before, greeted them with a smile.

"Hey there! You must be Alexis," she said, wiping her hands on her apron. "Welcome to Mountain Brews. What can I get for you?"

"I'll have a hot chocolate, please," Alexis said, remembering her promise from the day before.

"Coming right up," Clara replied. "Jane, your usual?"

"Yes, please," Jane said. "Alexis, Clara makes the best hot chocolate in the state. You're in for a treat."

As they waited for their drinks, Clara chatted with them about village life. She was full of energy and enthusiasm, and Alexis found her easy to talk to.

"So, Alexis, what brings you to Snowmass Village?" Clara asked as she handed him his hot chocolate.

Alexis hesitated for a moment, then decided to be honest. "My parents passed away recently, and I needed a place to stay. Aunt Jane offered to take me in."

Clara's expression softened. "I'm so sorry to hear that. But I'm glad you're here. This village has a way of healing people, you know?"

"Thanks, Clara. I appreciate that," Alexis said, taking a sip of his hot chocolate. It was rich and creamy, the warmth spreading through him.

They spent the next few hours visiting various shops and meeting more villagers. There was Mrs. Gardner, the florist with a passion for rare plants; George, the blacksmith who doubled as the local handyman; and the friendly folks at the community center, where events and gatherings were held.

By midday, Alexis felt like he had a good sense of the village and its inhabitants. Everyone he met was welcoming and seemed genuinely interested in getting to know him.

As they headed back home, Jane turned to Alexis. "What do you think so far?"

"It's... different from New York, but in a good way," Alexis said. "Everyone here is so friendly. It's almost overwhelming."

Jane laughed. "You'll get used to it. Snowmass Village is special like that. Now, how about we grab some lunch and then I'll show you around the college?"

"That sounds good," Alexis said, feeling a mixture of excitement and nervousness about starting college in a new place.

Back at the house, they had a quick lunch and then drove to the local college. It was a small but well-regarded institution, known for its close-knit community and dedicated faculty. Alexis had enrolled in the environmental science program, hoping to channel his love for nature into a meaningful career.

The campus was beautiful, nestled among the mountains with stunning views in every direction. Jane took him to the administration building first, where he completed his registration and got his schedule.

"You're all set," said Ms. Porter, the registrar. "Welcome to Snowmass College, Alexis. If you need anything, don't hesitate to ask."

"Thank you," Alexis said, pocketing his student ID.

Jane led him around the campus, showing him the various buildings and introducing him to some of the professors and staff. Everyone seemed eager to help him settle in.

Their final stop was the student lounge, a cozy space with comfortable seating and a fireplace. A group of students was gathered around, chatting and laughing. Jane nudged Alexis forward.

"Go on, introduce yourself," she whispered.

Alexis took a deep breath and walked over. "Hi, I'm Alexis. I'm new here."

The group turned to him with welcoming smiles. "Hey, Alexis! I'm Sam," said a tall guy with sandy hair. "This is Mia, Tyler, and Rachel. Welcome to Snowmass College."

"Thanks," Alexis said, feeling a bit more at ease. "I'm really looking forward to starting classes."

"What are you studying?" Mia asked.

"Environmental science," Alexis replied.

"Awesome! I'm in that program too," Rachel said. "We'll probably have some classes together."

As they chatted, Alexis felt a growing sense of belonging. Maybe Snowmass Village wasn't just a place to escape his past, but a place where he could build a future. The thought filled him with a newfound sense of hope and anticipation.

That evening, back at Jane's house, Alexis sat by the fireplace, reflecting on the day. He still missed his parents terribly, but he felt like he was starting to find his footing in this new place. Snowmass Village was beginning to feel like home.

"Tomorrow's a new day," he thought, gazing into the flickering flames. "A new beginning." And with that, he felt a sense of peace he hadn't felt in a long time, ready to face whatever adventures and challenges lay ahead.
