Chapter Thirty-One
Don't Be MiserableThud. Thud. Thud.
Alyssa's boots pounded on the ground. The sound of which was only second to her heart pounding loudly, as if it were right next to her ears. She might as well have been causing earthquakes with every step. She couldn't wait. Alexandria couldn't wait.
She thought of the first time she met Maggie. The sun was low in the sky as she drove through that town in Georgia. The Walkers surrounded the young couple. The car jerked on impact when she hit them and watched a few roll over her windshield.
She thought of their friends. So many of them. She thought of their goodbyes, she thought of their burials, she thought of the sobbing of those who would survive them.
She thought of Carl. Rick. Judith. Michonne. Daryl. Rosita. Carol. Tara. Eugene. Abraham. Sasha. Even Gabriel, Deanna, and Aaron. Her family, her home.
She ran past the trees and buildings. She wasn't sure if Mikey and Enid were still with them, but she couldn't look back. It didn't matter to her now. Nothing mattered to her now other than getting in there and getting to her family.
Somehow, someway, they were getting into that place.
Alyssa made her way into the church just outside the gate. She had just barely managed to dodge more than a few Walkers on her way in, but she made it. Once the others were inside, she shut the door and locked it.
"Maybe when they searched this place they missed something," Glenn theorized as he walked between the benches. "Depends if it was Aiden or Heath's group who went through it. Look underneath benches. Loose floorboards. Bibles, too. They could've hollowed out the pages."
Enid frowned. "Are you serious?"
Glenn searched the piano in the corner. "People hide bullets, ammo, maybe something to start a fire. It's getting dark out soon, maybe we can distract them. We need sheets, ropes, towels, anything Maggie can use to climb down the other side."
Enid stood in the aisle of the church, staring up at a quote above the door. "When I wanted to run, you said 'That's how you lose people. Even after they're gone'. What the hell does that mean?"
Alyssa looked up from the boxes she was searching through. "Enid, this is not the time."
Glenn shook his head. "It's okay," he said. "People you love, they made you who you are. They're still part of you. If you stop being you, that last bit of them that's still around inside, who you are, it's gone."
Enid turned around. "Who are those people to you?"
"My parents. A man named Dale. Maggie's father Hershel. A woman named Andrea. A man named Tyreese," Glenn listed. "Who are they to you?"
Enid bit her cheek. "My parents."
"Then they are still here," Glenn told her. "Cause you're still here."
