Alexander"I already said no Eden. What do you mean they're still coming?"
A rerun of this Sunday's football games are playing on the TV as I workout in the weight room with Jordan, my sister on the phone with me as I lift.
Matt had already gone back to his dad's house and Aiden just caught his flight back to California this morning.
Jordan and I were the only two left. But he was about to make the drive back to his dad's place in New York. I had to catch my flight to New York in a few hours, but it wasn't like I was staying long enough to stop by and say hi.
"Mom called last night and asked me when she could bring over the turkey." I hear her voice through my headphones as I set the barbell back on the rack. "Sounds to me like they're coming."
"Then we can just lock the front doors," I sat up and wiped the sweat off my forehead.
She laughs at my proposal, "We can't lock our parents out of their own home."
"Like it's their house Eden, they're never there." I take a sip of my water and look over to Jordan, who's minding his own business.
He's the only one who knows about my parents. Not the whole truth or story, but he knows more than the others do.
I guess it's because he's the most easygoing out of all of us. He never has an opinion about much, and when he does, it's levelheaded.
"I know Alex, but what exactly are we gonna do when they're knocking at the door on Thursday?" she asks.
I sit in silence for a moment. Locking them out sounds heartless but it's not exactly like I want to see them.
Nor do my sisters.
"I don't know E." I respond.
I can hear her sigh on her end. "I call the others to see what they're doing. If nothing happens, I guess it's Thanksgiving with the parents."
I notice the sarcastic emphasis on parents. We both know they hardly filled that role.
"Alright," I comply but already feel a headache coming on just thinking about a sit down dinner with my nonexistent parents. "Let me know what they say."
"Okay, Jas says hi by the way."
"Tell her I say hi back." I stand up noticing Jordan finishing up his workout too. "I'll see you guys in a few days."
"Hold on," Eden stops me from almost ending the call. "She'd also like to know about your little girl who's a friend at school."
I pause but then laugh. "What is she talking about?"
I play it off only because it catches me slightly off guard.
How the fuck does she know about Evie?
"Nope. Don't do that." she laughs.
"Do what?"
"Play it off." she says. "Jas has a lot of questions...so do I Alex."
This time I sigh. "How do you two even know there's a girl?" I ask.
Her answer doesn't even make sense to me. "You've liked all her posts on social media Alex."
"So?" I question. "I can't like people's posts now?"
"It's not that, it's just...oh forget it, you wouldn't understand anyways." Eden digresses but now I'm intrigued.
