The city sprawled beneath me like a maze of secrets and shattered dreams. From my vantage point on the rooftop, I could see the glimmering lights of downtown, where the elite danced their way through life, oblivious to the darkness lurking just beyond their reach. New Harbor City—where every corner told a story, and not all of them were pretty. My name is Malik Knight. I'm sixteen, with a legacy hanging heavy over my head like a storm cloud. People know my father, Darius Knight, as Senator Knight—the charming face of hope and change in our city. They don't see what lies beneath that polished exterior—the shadows he left behind, the whispers of a past steeped in blood and betrayal. I should be proud of my father. He's climbed from the streets to the Senate, a testament to his ambition and cunning. But ambition has a price, and in our family, it's etched into every scar on my mother's arms and every hollow look in her eyes. Mom. Keshia Thompson. Coco, they used to call her when she lit up the room with her smile. Now, she's a ghost haunting the edges of my memories, lost to the darkness of addiction and abandonment. They say she left us—that Dad locked her away when she became too much of a liability. But who's to say what's true in a city built on lies? Tonight, the wind carries the scent of rain, a promise of cleansing or chaos, depending on who you ask. I lean against the cool metal of the water tower, watching as the city prepares for another night of masks and illusions. Dad's world. Not mine.I tug at the leather cuff around my wrist, a reminder of the choices I'm supposed to make—the path laid out for me, paved with promises and pitfalls. Follow in Dad's footsteps, they say. Embrace the legacy. But every time I look down that road, all I see is darkness, swallowing everything in its wake. A distant siren pierces the night, a reminder that even in a city of illusions, reality has teeth. I turn away from the edge, back toward the city that raised me and the secrets that bind us all.
Tomorrow, the sun will rise again over New Harbor City. And maybe, just maybe, I'll find the courage to step out of my father's shadow and into the light of my own truth.
But tonight, I'm just Malik Knight—a boy caught between the sins of the past and the uncertain promise of tomorrow, but im getting too ahead of myself let's start from the beginning
The rain came down in sheets this evening, drenching the city in a relentless downpour. I stood on the cracked pavement outside our apartment building, the streetlights flickering dimly against the gloom. Water streamed down my face, mingling with tears I refused to let fall.I shoved my hands deep into the pockets of my hoodie, seeking solace in the warmth of the fabric. This was my sanctuary—the quiet moments before the storm, before the chaos of our fractured family threatened to swallow me whole once again. "Malik Knight, get in here now!" I heard my father's booming voice pierce through the rain and the silence. I looked up to see his face peering down at me, his expression twisted into anger, as usual.
Reluctantly, I made my way inside, the chill of the rain clinging to my clothes. Dad was waiting at the bottom of the stairs, his presence filling the cramped hallway of our apartment like an oppressive force.
"What did I tell you to do, boy?" His voice was sharp, cutting through the air like a knife.
I took a deep breath, trying to steady myself before responding. "Dad, I know. I'm going to do it now."
His eyes narrowed, scrutinizing me as if searching for any hint of defiance. "You better. We've got enough problems without you adding to them."
I nodded silently, my jaw clenched tight to hold back the words I wanted to say. There was no point arguing with him, not when his mind was already made up.
Turning away, I trudged up the stairs to my room. The walls seemed to close in around me, suffocating in their familiarity. I closed the door behind me with a soft click, shutting out the chaos that simmered just beyond.
