As the narrator of this story, I wish I could start this book on a peaceful day with sunshine and flowers and children skipping through meadows. However, this is not a happy beginning, but it just might have a happy ending...

The forest was somehow more wicked on this night. The harsh rain beat down on the two boys as the flooded forest floor caused them to sink into the Earth with every step.

"It's so cold Onyx" the youngest brother whines as his short legs fight to keep up with his determined older brother.

"Just a little further Ozzie I promise." Onyx reaches back to grab his younger brother's frost-bitten hand and leads them through the unforgiving forest. Onyx resists the urge to flinch away from his brother's frozen fingers entangling with his. Though they may be creatures of the living dead due to their young age and malnourishment their abilities are weakened making them weak to the harsh conditions of the world. Though he is only three years older than his brother, Onyx has always been the more composed twin ready to diffuse and resolve any situation. But the recent events of the brothers being put out of their home has put his calming abilities to the test.

****Flashback****

"MOM!" Ozzie screamed. "Mom please wake up", the little boy shook his mother. His soft brown curls shook with his head as his pale skin stained his mother's blood with every push. His older brother Onyx stood over taking in the scene as tears kissed the brim of his eyes threatening to spill onto his pale cheeks. The two boys were too shocked and overwhelmed by grief to notice the footsteps slowly getting closer to them.

"What a bunch of disgraces." Their father, Lord Virgil Fitzgerald, proclaimed. "That nagging woman finally births me heirs to my name only for them to be weak, sorry muts. Patricia might have been compassionate enough to tolerate your pitiful existence, but I hold no such affection to either of you."

"Father please! Punish me and me alone! Ozzie was asleep when the attacker struck."

"Silence! You are vampires. You are one of the strongest beings on this planet and you wish to tell me the reason you could not protect your mother was because you were asleep? What now? Should a king accept that his queen was slain simply because the royal guards were asleep? Because they were tired?" Virgil suddenly appeared in front of Onyx harshly grabbing him by the neck as the young boy dangled in there air now at face level with his father. "I used to have so much hope for you, Onyx. Your mother constantly complained to me about putting too much pressure on her precious twelve year old boys, and I have to admit she was right. I did put too much faith in such weak creatures as yourselves." Virgil hands suddenly released Onyx as the boy fell harshly on the floor. Ozzie scurried over to his brother pulling him away from their father with his blood stained hands. "I Virgil Fitzgerald, Lord of Mount Vesterna disown you Ozzie Fitzgerald and Onyx Fitzgerlad and banish you from ever returning to Mount Versterna again." With that Virgil grabbed the boys in his hands and teleported them to the front of their manor, throwing them out of the door, sealing their fate.

****Present Time****

After several hours of navigating the rugged forest Onyx notices lights appearing in the distance.

"Brother." Onyx lightly squeezes Ozzies hand to get his attention.

"Lights! We finally found a way out!" With a newfound energy Ozzie sprints towards the lights while still tightly grasping his brother's hand in the process. As the lights become brighter with each step, the boys notice that the source of the lights is a house. A manor in fact. One eerily similar to the one they just got kicked out of. But with little energy and no other options present the brothers must seek refuge wherever they can.

Once they approach the manor, Onyx grabs the gold ring on the door with shaky hands and bangs it against the aged wood as hollow bangs echo inside the house.

"I... I think this manor may be abandoned..."

"Why hello dearies." A tall slender woman with slick black hair answered the door. "Oh you two are soaked please come in." She guided Onyx and Ozzie further inside the manor and led them to an extravagant living room where she led them to a soft sofa.

"Mommy who's at the door?" A little tanned red headed boy asked.

"Yeah mom I thought the babysitter wasn't coming until next Tuesday." A similar looking boy with blond hair added.

"Oh Jamie, Jaxon, we have guests!" The woman cheerily announced as she turned around to her sons. "Meet... Oh, dear I forgot to ask your names."

"I'm Onyx and I'm 12 years old." The older brother with pitch black hair responded. She nudged his little brother to speak up.

"Oh, I'm Ozzie and I'm 9 years old." The little brown haired boy answered.

"Hiya! I'm Jamie!" Stated the freckled redhead. "And this grumpy fella over here is Jaxon." Ozzie and Onyx smiled back at Jamie as they turned to look at Jaxon. "Oh and if you couldn't tell we're twins!" With longer the vampire brothers looked at the twins they noticed the differences and similarities between them. Jamie was clearly more cheery with tanned, freckled skin and orange-reddish hair. Jaxon on the other hand was more stand-offish and had golden blond hair to complement his tanned skin. The one thing the twins did seem to share was their bright lavender eyes.

"Well Ozzie and Onyx I am Esmerelda the mother of the twins. Their father is... Well let's just say he went on a very lengthy business trip." Esmerelda sat down next to the young vampires. "You two are a long way from home."

"We were from Mount Vesterna, raised as the sons and heirs to Lord Virgil Fitzgerald. But our father formerly disowned us and we now remain without a title and without a home." Onyx replies.

"I see... How would you two like to live here permanently."

"Oh Lady Esmerelda we would be honored."

"I, Esmerelda Montgomery proclaimed Ozzie and Onyx as my children making them both a Montgomery." With that Esmerelda embraced the young boys with a tight hug and ushered her sons as they did the same. Jamie hugged them tight with joyful eagerness while Jaxon gave them both a quick pat as he left to go to bed.
