It was morning. I was lying on my bed withk my eyes open. Through the open window I could hear the sweet chirping of birds singing every morning at dawn. "Today is a new day," I thought. I got out of bed and looked out the window, where my garden could be seen. When I had moved into this house, the garden had nothing but grass. Edd,Tom and Matt, friends I had met,had helped me renovate it and added flowers, bushes and more. They had always been a great help to me,but now--let's leave it at that.
The lights on the poles were going out one by one as the sun slowly rose. I got dressed and went to the kitchen. I took my favorite cup, filled the kettle with water and waited. In the meantime I opened the refrigerator, grabbed a jar of strawberry jam and made three sandwiches. "I think that's enough," I said to myself. When they were finished,I took them and went to the living room, where the cellar door was located, locked by red chains. I had kept it locked like that since that terrible day and opened it only when I had to feed them. I slowly opened the door and took a peek inside, although it was all dark. I took a big breath and announced, "Boys! Breakfast is ready! R-remember to share!" With that said,I threw sandwiches down the stairs and snapped the door shut. The living room began to shake for a few seconds and then stopped. "Perfect,I gave them breakfast.... I better go eat now." I went back to the kitchen, got a chocolate bar, toast and jam. Then I poured the water from the kettle to the cup and put a tea bag in it. Once it was ready I began to drink it. In the process I also read a book Edd had given me before....
Breakfast finished,I got up and went out to the park. As soon as I stepped outside the house,I heard the voice of my neighbor Eduardo. "Well, well, well," he said with a smirk on his lips as he crossed his arms. "Hi Eduardo." "Hey Angie, where are you off to today?" he asked. "Just going to the park..." "Oh good! And tell me,how are the green garden gnome and his gang?" That was Eduardo's way of calling Edd,Tom and Matt.
"Oh...well...it's not like they are in great shape.... You know, they have a high fever,nausea,vomiting,headaches...." Eduardo's expression became quite worried. "Oh...I understand... It must be hard for you to take care of them all alone...." I jerked slightly upon hearing his words, thinking that he wanted to help me. But I didn't want to. "N-nothing at all! In fact,I'm doing just fine! I don't need anyone to help me!..." I said trying to sound convincing. He scrutinized me from head to toe, raising an eyebrow. "Are you sure about that? You don't look like you look good. I mean...you look exhausted.... Do you even sleep at night?" I nodded, "Of course I do! I feel great!" Eduardo looked at me suspiciously but worriedly at the same time. "D-d'accord,Angie...if you say so..." he said before saying goodbye and watching me walk away. Once I arrived at the park,I went to the pond and sat on a bench. Whenever I was there,I felt calm and was able to forget all the negative thoughts that were going through my mind. But not the basement. It was as if it haunted me,all I could do was think about it. The park used to have bright colors but since that time it had begun to take on dark colors. Once a lot of people used to go there,a lot of children, now nobody went there anymore. I felt as if the world did not want me anymore,as if it was trying to get rid of me at all costs. Every day I tried to smile at life but it was all in vain. With each passing day I felt more and more lonely. I used to be a girl who wanted to live, now I just wanted to disappear. Yesterday there were colorful fish in the pond, today there are gray fish, tomorrow there will be no more. I used to see happy people around all the time. They saw life in a totally different way than I did. Because I was seeing death, anxiety, fear, loneliness, blood.
What had happened? Why was I acting that way? What had I done wrong to deserve this? Why was I like that? Why?I decided that for lunch I would go to the Diner, the place where I used to go out to eat. I sat down at a table and waited for Pyper, the waitress,to arrive. About two minutes later, she arrived. "Angie, dear! You're back at last! How are you?" she said in a cheerful tone. "I'm fine, thank you." "So,how are your friends? Are they healed?" I began to sweat but kept my composure and replied, "Well...no. They are still sick....". She looked at me worriedly, "Oh,poor things.... I'm really sorry! I hope they get well soon." I smiled weakly at her "Yes,I hope so too...." Pyper patted me on the shoulder "Good thing you're okay,Angie. But...are you really sure you don't need any help? I mean...it must be hard to take care of your friends all by yourself.... Are you sure you-" I knew very well what she was going to say,so I interrupted her. "Oh! No,no,no! Of course not! I don't need any help!" Pyper looked at me rather worriedly "Are you really sure? I mean--I know you don't have enough money to call a doctor and get them treated--but if you want I can pay for it for you!" He said with a smile on his lips. I began to sweat more and more. I could feel my heart beating "No! No,really,no! You don't need to spend your money on me! You are really kind,but...really...you don't need to bother..." I said, trying to convince her. She looked at me for a few seconds with the same worried expression and then sighed and gave up. "All right,dear... But know that if you should change your mind,I am there," she said in a sweet and gentle tone. I smiled and thanked her,and then took my order.
Once I finished eating and paid,I went out and came home and sat on the couch watching TV. About 1 hour later,I got up and went to the kitchen to get some leftover slices of pizza and returned to the living room, opened the cellar door and announced "Guys! It's time for dinner!!!" I threw the slices down the stairs and quickly closed the door. "Well...I can go to sleep now..." I thought, and then went to my room and tried to fall asleep, hoping that that night had not been my last....
