"Hey mate, how's she doing?" Lando asked, quietly shutting the hospital room door behind him.

"They took her down to surgery to pin the leg, she's only been back an hour or so. She's pretty out of it." Jon explained.

Aimee was sleeping peacefully in the bed, her leg propped up on a pillow and sporting a new cast. The bruising on her face had darkened since he'd left that morning, becoming more prominent as time went on.

"Has she said much?" Lando asked, perching on the end of the bed, careful not to jostle her leg.

Jon shook his head. "I did try but she just kept changing the subject and I didn't want to push it. We just put the tv on and watched the interviews in the end. How was it?"

Lando ran a hand through his hair. "Same old." He shrugged. "I uh... I spoke to Zak about..." he waved his hand in Aimee's direction.

"Oh." Jon raised an eyebrow. "How did that go?"

"I had to tell him. I know she didn't want me to but what else was I supposed to do?"

"It'll be okay, Lando." Jon tried to reassure him. "What did Zak say?"

"Well he went marching down to the garage and but Tom wasn't there." Lando sighed. "They called the police and went to the hotel looking for him but he's not there. All his stuff is gone. Zak said if he reappears he's obviously fired but I don't think he will."

"Shit." Jon whispered. "So they don't have a clue where he's gone?"

Lando shook his head. "You don't think he's... he wouldn't be stupid enough to come here looking for her, would he?" He finally voiced the concern that had been playing on his mind all day.

"What did the police say?" Jon asked.

"They'll keep looking and come by to get a statement from Aimee when she's ready." Lando sighed. "I'm fucking exhausted. My head has been spinning all day."

"I'll bet." Jon agreed. "You going to stay here for a bit?"

Lando nodded. "Zak said he'd stop by later when he's done at the track and see how we were getting on. Thanks for staying with her."

"Make sure you get some rest, mate. It's a big weekend for you. Call me if you need anything, either of you." Jon said, giving Lando a pat on the shoulder as he got up to leave.

It left Lando alone with a still sleeping Aimee. Five minutes after he'd taken Jon's seat he was fast asleep in the chair beside her bed, head rested on the bed as he held her hand.

"Lando..." he woke disorientated to the sound of his name, aware of someone touching the top of his head. "Lando, wake up."

He lifted his head, blinking sleepily at Aimee who was looking at him apologetically. "Are you okay?" His neck was already protesting at the awkward angle he'd been sleeping at.

Aimee grimaced, but nodded. "I'm really sorry. Could you find a nurse and ask them if I can have some more painkillers?"

He jumped up and disappeared out of the door, quickly coming back with a nurse and the much needed painkillers. He knew Aimee well enough to know that if she was actually asking for pain relief then she was really uncomfortable.

It wasn't long after she had her pain relief and finally started to relax a little that Zak showed up. Aimee shot a panicked look at Lando as Zak stuck his head in the room.

"It's okay, promise." Lando reassured her. "Hi, Zak."

"Hi, how are we doing?" He asked, walking in and closing the door behind him. "I brought you these, from the team." He smiled, placing a bunch of flowers down on the table beside the bed.

"I uh... thanks." Aimee mumbled. She blindly grabbed Lando's hand looking for some reassurance.

Zak pulled up a chair and sat the other side of the bed, taking a breath for a moment as he looked for the words. It was well out of his comfort zone this situation and it showed.

"I just wanted to stop by and say anything you need, you just let me know. We're a family at McLaren and we're all here for you. I am so, so sorry that things have reached this point. You take all the time you need, your job is still there whenever you're ready. Lando said he's happy for you to stay with him until you can travel but we can sort you out a hotel or whatever if you want if he's too annoying. Anything at all. You just let me know."

"Thanks, Zak." Aimee mumbled, brushing away a stray tear that escaped her at his words.

"I'd better get back, I've got plenty to sort out, but please if you need anything. You know where I am."

"Cheers, Zak." Lando called as their boss disappeared out of the door.

He turned his attention back to Aimee who now had tears streaming freely down her face. "It's okay, you're okay." He reassured, and before he knew what he was doing he'd climbed onto the bed beside her, wrapping his arms around her.

Aimee would've liked to have blamed the sudden outburst of emotion on all the morphine, but really it was that fact the reality of what had happened had hit her like a tonne of bricks.

"It's going to be okay." Lando said quietly. "It'll all be okay."

"How can you say that?" Aimee choked out, words muffled against his shoulder as he held her.

"Because it will be." He said confidently. "You're going to get through this. One step at a time, and I'll be right here beside you."

There was a long pause, Aimee drawing in a few shaky breaths as Lando kept his hold on her.

"How can you be so sure?" She asked quietly, breaking him from his thoughts.

It took him a minute to work out what she was asking he'd been so lost in his thoughts.

"Because you're the strongest person I know." He said softly.
