Slight TW: Attempted SA, skip to Kenji's POV if sensitive to such content
When you're a child, you dream of being so many things; astronauts, a cop, firefighter, a superhero...
And in theory, it sounds fun, saving people, having powers, being adored by millions...You dream of some crazy thing happening to you, and gaining powers from it...
Until it actually happens.
Yeah, being hit by a fragment of a kaiju's dorsal plate while it was full of radioactive power, and learning eventually your body somehow absorbed that power?
Not. Fun.
At least, that's what Akari would say if someone asked her.
It started out slow, she had woken up a week after her encounter, she had been confused and dazed...not remembering what happened. Her mother and her father (who thankfully escaped the encounter unharmed) informed her that a fragment of Godzilla's dorsal plate had impaled her. The doctors were unsure of her survival, the fragment was so close to nicking a major artery in her shoulder.
And that's where it started.
Her recovery after her surgery was swift, fast...too fast, almost. The doctors were surprised, but inevitably chalked it up to her young age, and how active she was. Between scuba diving with her dad, working out, doing track and field, gymnastics, and dance she was in relatively good health. Still had some curves on her passed down from her mother's side of the family, but she was as healthy and fit as a horse.
And for awhile that's what they chalked up her recovery to, but then other things started to raise red flags for Akari.
Such as;
The first track and field competition after her recovery, one of the girls decided to play dirty. Her leg had hooked with Akari's, sending the girl knee first to the ground. However, instead of a shattered kneecap, all she got was a scrape that healed within the day. The doctors said she was lucky, Akari was starting to get freaked out.
There were other instances, small scrapes she'd get that healed fast, being faster on the field, her senses being more sensitive, and feeling more energized than usual.
But what drove it home was another accident on the boat, she begged her dad to let her out with him again. He had been freaked out after that battle between Tiamat and Godzilla, but Akari mastered her mother's puppy look, and it suckered Hiro into relenting. He wouldn't let her dive with him, though, she stayed on the boat while he went to go get Godzilla's vitals. She'd been grabbing his gear from the locker they kept them in, but neither realized that during the tussle, the locker came loose. She was pulling the air tanks out when a particularly heard current rocked the boat.
The locker groaned, then next thing she knew, it was toppling over, she gasped, her hands reaching out to stop it...and she did. Her hands collided with the metal, and it held...she was holding it up...no problem, no issue. With shaky hands she had set it upright, backing away in shock.
After that, she started testing it out, lifting heavier weights at the gym, pushing herself harder on the field, and in the gym during gymnastics. Soon enough she concluded something happened to her...she wasn't normal anymore.
Then came the day she figured just how unormal she's become.
She had been walking home from a late practice, and usually she never encounters anything or anyone who's threatened her. She keeps her wits about her, always has her pepper spray close, it's New York...while she knew it was a matter of time before something happened...
The time it actually did, it fucked with her in more ways than one.
"Yeah, mama, I'm keeping myself aware of my surroundings, I'm right around the block, I'm ok!" Akari had said into the phone, she always called her mother or her father on her walks, sending them her location so they know where she is just in case...
