Kelsey couldn't help but notice Shamar's constant glances, the biting of his lip, and his restless pacing. It was obvious he was holding back for her sake. But she wasn't shocked, it seemed her mom had really gone off the deep end this time. That day, they had gotten papers indicating her mother was suing both her and Shamar over unpaid wages, alleging she was their kids' in-home nanny who'd been fired without pay.
The twenty-two-page lawsuit claimed that Shamar and Kelsey had promised and provided long-term care, housing, as well as an allowance. Alleging that, following a work-related injury, the Carters suggested she leave her job to recuperate and assist with the children. She was requesting housing and an additional $5,200 a month. Since they were family, none of these arrangements were formalized in a contract, but Lisa intended to pursue the matter regardless. She was asking the judge to have them honor their verbal agreement and continue to pay for her housing and upkeep. And now she was standing in their living area with Robert, of all people. Requesting that if she can no longer be their nanny she would like to have grandparent visitation.
Kelsey had let her mom know well in advance that Shamar's generosity would not last forever, especially if she had anything to say about it. Lisa had never truly been a mother to Kelsey, and she tolerated her presence because her children loved their grandmother. However, with time, Kelsey decided she no longer wanted her mom around as much. She was willing to let her visit the children, but regarding any employment, Kelsey preferred to sever ties. Things changed after Justine died. Her mother-in-love was part of the reason she even agreed to let her mom come around in the first place. She picked up Lisa's slack so much Kelsey didn't have enough room in her heart to hate her mom as much as she wanted to. Justine was love, wisdom, and positivity. She knew how to bring people together. And when she died it was like all of that went with her.
The only mother she had ever really known was now gone and she resented the one she was stuck with. What was left of her and her mother's relationship was a thing of the past which Kelsey wished to distance herself from. After all, it was Shamar, not Kelsey, who had employed her.
"No, no, no," Kelsey exclaimed, rising to her feet, dressed in Givenchy from head to toe. She had heard enough. They were already late, and she sensed Shamar was on the verge of losing his temper. "If you want to go to court over this whole money thing, we'll go to court, but any time spent with your grandchildren will be with me present," she said.
"Why do we need to go to court? I can just pay her and be done with this," Shamar retorted, rising to his feet, eager to conclude the discussion. He was aware of Lisa's ways, but he had a sufficient amount of funds to sway her to his benefit. So whenever she threw tantrums about money, he gave it to her.
"No, Shamar, we're not paying her another dime. Lisa you never did shit for me, you've never cared about me, so you're done reaping the benefits of me. And then you're still with this man after everything I told you about him?! All these years I've been taking care of you I hope you saved some of that money because you're gonna need it. And Shamar," Kelsey said as she turned to her husband and approached him.
"If you give her even one more cent, we're going to have a problem," she declared.
With a smirk, Shamar nodded and cast a final glance at his mother-in-law before making his way to the elevator. "Hurry up," he urged, stepping onto the lift that was waiting for them both.
"Stop being so dramatic, I have always taken care of you. You're just an ungrateful little bitch, it was my house you were living in before you met him!" Lisa yelled, pointing to Shamar
"I was paying bills in that same house, getting kicked out of it, and even receiving threats there!"
"You know what? I'm not even going to argue with you, Kelsey. Just like I filed a lawsuit for the money you owe me, I can file another one to see my grandchildren," she replied as she headed towards the elevator with Robert behind her.
