"Bunkies dead"

"Bunkies dead"

"Bunkies dead"

"Bunkies dead"

"Bunkies dead"

"Bunkies dead"

"Bunkies dead"

"Bunkies dead"

"Bunkies dead"

Those words echoed in my head over and over again.

I couldn't remember how I got here, but I was sitting in my dad's living room. We all were: me, Hakeem, Jamal, Andre, Momma, Daddy, Uncle Vernon, and Anika.

They were talking, but I couldn't hear anything over the sound of my heart beating in my ears. It felt like I was drowning. I didn't even know I was crying until a tear landed on my hand.

"DON'T TOUCH ME!" My head snapped up to see Hakeem ripping himself away from our mother.

"Keem," Jamal called, chasing after him.

I stayed put, not knowing whether to move or not. But once Uncle Vernon and Dre left, I decided it was definitely my time to go.

I couldn't be in a room with just my parents and Anika. I went upstairs to my old bedroom. The door opened with a creak.

I looked around, seeing it was untouched. A layer of dust coated my old dressers and surfaces.

I sat down on my old bed, taking it all in.

That's when I started to sob, and I didn't stop for what felt like hours. I couldn't believe he was gone.

It seemed like just yesterday he was teaching me how to tie my shoes.

After what felt like hours of clutching my pillow, I finally stopped crying, exhausted.

My eyes felt like they were bulging out of my head, and I couldn't breathe through my nose. Suddenly, the clothes I was wearing became extremely uncomfortable, so I got up, shuffling over to my old dresser.

Luckily, there were still clothes in there. I changed before getting into bed and falling asleep instantly.

I woke up groggy with a pounding headache.

I wanted to go back to sleep, but the bustling outside the room forbade it.

I got up, grabbing my clothes and putting them into a forgotten bag I found in the closet.

I made my way downstairs, being met with my entire family except Bunkie.

"Good morning, sleepy head," my mom said, coming over and kissing my cheek.

"Morning," I replied, my voice hoarse and raspy, probably from all the crying.

"Ma, can you take me home?" I asked, slinging the bag over my shoulder.

"Sit down and eat breakfast first, okay?" I nodded, placing the bag by the stairs and going into the dining room.

When I sat down, all eyes were on me.

"Um...hi?" The staring dispersed, but no one reciprocated my greeting.
