As I showed Elena the library, I could see the fatigue in her eyes. She seemed content, and I knew this space brought her comfort. Little did she know, I had designed this library with her love for books in mind, a sanctuary I had created just for her. It pained me to think she believed it was solely mine.
We settled at the dining table for dinner. Elena was quiet, her exhaustion palpable. She didn't speak much, and I understood she was still processing the traumatic events of the day. My heart ached as I replayed the scene in my mind, recalling how she had pleaded with that man to stop.
Tomorrow, I would confront him. He was now under my authority, but the bruises on Elena's arm weighed heavily on me. If only I had been there, if I hadn't gone home instead of visiting the office, she might never have endured such a harrowing experience.
Elena didn't eat much. At first, she didn't want to eat at all, but after my insistence, she agreed. However, she barely took three bites.
"I don't want to eat. I'm done now," she said, pushing her plate away. I didn't press her further and simply nodded.
"You can go to sleep, Elena. You're tired," I said gently, calling Mrs. Smith to escort her to the guest room and help her settle in. Mrs. Smith took her away, and I watched them disappear down the hallway.
I went to my study and sat down in the chair, dialing a number. As soon as the call connected, I asked, "Is he good now?"
"Yes, he's up now. The doctor said he's okay," the voice on the other end replied.
"Good. I want him to be perfectly fine before I start my work on him."
"Don't worry, sir. We'll take good care of him," the voice assured me.
I hung up the call and felt a wave of exhaustion wash over me. I must have dozed off because when I opened my eyes, it was 12:30 AM. I had only slept for about 40 minutes. I got up and made my way to the bar, pouring myself a drink and downing it in one go.
I was keeping my calm only for Elena's sake, but inside, my heart was burning with rage. I wanted to burn down the whole world for her.
As I was sitting there lost in my thoughts, I heard someone walking. Though it was dim, I was sure it was Elena; her light steps confirmed it for me, and I could smell her familiar scent.
"Why are you up, Elena?" I asked.
She came forward, her face illuminated by the dim lights, looking so pretty despite her red eyes. Maybe she had cried again.
"I'm not able to sleep," she answered lazily.
"Do you want a drink?" I asked.
"No, thanks for asking."
I stood up and walked over to her. She felt so small in front of me, and a smirk appeared on my face as I imagined how she would look under me.
"Do you want something, Elena?" I asked, sensing she had something on her mind but couldn't say it.
