4 years after the events of undertale (the true pacifist route) it's Frisks 15th birthday and Toriel is notably missing. After Frisk goes to find her, he discovers Toriel silently sobbing in her classroom. He asked her what's wrong And she explained that his birthday was also birthday of Chara. Frisk feels horrible and refuses to keep the secret that frisk could hear Chara when he was in the underground. Frisk takes Toriel to see Alphys and ask if there was any way to bring Chara back because of this fact. Alphys explains that the fact alone that chara could persist after death in any way means that they must also have a high DETERMINATION and she explains that people with a high DETERMINATION can stay alive and healthy with only half of their soul and that with a physical form and half of Frisk's Soul they could theoretically bring Chara back to life.
