Crap, crap, crap. I knew as soon as the kitchen fell silent that I had really stepped my foot in it. Mistakenly, I had presumed that the figure behind me was the boss, or perhaps someone in management, and I hadn't thought that it would be the very person I was trying so hard to avoid. The universe had a funny way of doing things, and as someone in tune with the invisible energies of the universe, I already knew that to be true.

Okay, so maybe I had overreacted a little with my whole outburst. I was attracting a lot of attention to myself, but I was crabby! I had just flown a six-hour journey at full speed above the stratosphere, which cut it down to about two. But still, full speed for that long was exhausting! Not to mention the elements that one had to battle with up there.

I had to find a way to sneak into this place, which wasn't easy at all. Maybe pretending to be a guest would have been a better option, but it's hard to perform magic under pressure, especially when it's pretty much your first time practicing it in the wild.

I saw the waitresses going through the back, and honestly, I thought I'd be more inconspicuous that way! What would Drake want with a plain old waitress?

I thought it was genius. Of course, I had no intention of getting anywhere near him, but I could have told the coven that I planned to slip a love potion in his drink and was unfortunate enough to not be allowed anywhere near him. I had willed my name onto the manager's clipboard and created the same waitress outfit right there on the spot, with only one look at the others! Albeit mine looked slightly different, but still, I had done a good job.

But here I was, a complete and utter emotional wreck. How was I expected to waitress (something I'd never done before) after all that exhaustion?

Try using magic in a fast-paced back kitchen with people screaming down your neck. Not very easy at all.

So yes, I cracked. But being homeschooled in a coven deep in the woods didn't exactly teach you many social skills. I guess our elders didn't think much about those effects of isolation.

I walked outdoors and found myself  on the rooftop where the music was just about livening up. There were groups of people dancing, shouting, doing all sorts. I didn't know what was more overwhelming, the kitchen or here? Man, I hate people. I swooped up a tray from a little ledge close to the outdoor bar. Just keep yourself busy and stay hidden, I heard a voice inside me instruct.

Drake must have thought I was crazy. But what was that little electric buzz? Ignore it. Of course, he was hot, but I knew that before. He's a fucking sex symbol. A sex symbol who I'd been ordered to kill.

I couldn't shake the feeling that something was watching me and plenty of things probably were. Mother warned me before I left that I could never be sure how and when the elders were gathering information on my whereabouts.
