"What do you even see in that guy? He's done nothing for you."
"Please. He's done way more than anything you'll ever do!"
Seated just between the two, Pico sighs and digs his head further into the palm of his hand. Every year, it had become a tradition for Nene and her "soon-to-be high school sweetheart" to profess their love for one another in some grandiose way. And every year, pico got to listen to the same conversation, over and over and over again. He doesn't know why Darnell insists on having this discussion despite all of them knowing that Nene's not going to break up with her boyfriend, or why Nene continues to expect him to cause a scene for her every valentines day. He just knows that he's tired of hearing it.
"You two have been together for seven years, Nene! How the hell does he not know you're lactose intolerant?!"
"It's not his fault that I never told him, Why are always so fucking peeved about this?"
Nene shifts her head in the direction of Pico, eyes glaring daggers,
"-And what the hell are you staring at?!"
The slice in her tone startles him just enough to knock him out of his dazed stare. He clears his throat, watching her snatch a pencil off his desk and sharpen it with a pocket knife she smuggled in.
"My bad, sorry I wasn't interested in your 'couple talk'. It's not like we have this conversation every year..."
He mumbles the last part, shifting in his seat until he's facing more towards Darnell, who snickers in response. He learns pretty quickly that Nene doesn't find it funny at all, raising the previously not sharpened pencil above her head, and slamming it down on his desk with a force so strong it sends a vibration through the floorboards. The action garners the attention of a couple students, causing a small rise out of their quiet banter. She waits until they settle down, then lifts the pocket knife up until Pico's staring at it cross-eyed and whispers,-
"Why don't we talk about your relationship then. Bf never does anything for you on valentines day, does he?"
Darnell puts a hand on her shoulder and shakes his head.
"Come on, Nene. Valentine's day isn't everything. Besides, Bf is pretty shy, I don't think he'd wanna cause a scene the way you do."
Pico doesn't necessarily know if he'd categorize Boyfriend as...."shy". He wasn't quite a talker, sure, and often tended to hang more around Pico than he did Nene and Darnell, but he was also the reason that so many teachers ended up quitting. It was known to everyone that Boyfriend was...selectively mute. The only times he tended to feel comfortable enough to speak, often came when Pico and him were alone. But where Boyfriend lacked speech, he made up for it in his actions. Pico doesn't know how many times he's had to bail Boyfriend out of detention. From stealing the janitor's keys, to forging the staff's signatures to make and sell fake passes(the latter earning him a nice week of suspension and at least two-hundred dollars), Boyfriend was nothing short of a troublemaker. And yet, despite his seemingly big lack of intellect and strong desire to cause chaos, he was a good kid at heart. Too many times Boyfriend had dropped everything to come to his aid, no matter if it had been something he was versed in or not. He was never the type to hold grudges either, always being the first to let things go in order to just be 'chill'. No matter what it was that Boyfriend was(or wasn't) doing, nine-times-out-of-ten it was for a good reason. Or, as good a reason as you can get with balls for brains.
It's the reason why Pico had never been angry at the idea that Boyfriend didn't do big things for him on valentines day. He didn't need to "out valentine" every couple around him and that was fine. Besides, he knows that Boyfriend would love him more than anything he could have gotten him and that was enough for him.
