"Just surrender and it won't hurt at all"

When I got out of the pitch-black car, I had no idea what turn my life would take.

Despite the black sunglasses, my eyes needed a moment to get used to the bright light of the desert sun shining high above the Puente Antiguo. "We have an 084?", I asked my boss, who seemed to be waiting for me in the makeshift quarters.

He led me through the makeshift quarters and into a small courtyard. "Right. So far it looks like a hammer that fell from the sky and can't be lifted. There was a huge storm with unusual values that probably mean as little to you as they do to me," Coulson explained as if it were the most normal thing in the world and pointed to the metal thing that stood in the middle of a considerable crater. The last part of his statement was most likely accurate. I had absolutely no idea about physical, supernatural, or other complicated values.

"And no one saw how it got here?" I asked curiously, stepping a little closer. Out of the corner of my eye, I saw Coulson shaking his head. "No. We asked a few people, but all they could tell us was about this storm." I nodded absentmindedly.

The unknown object didn't look as heavy as he claimed. But as you know appearances can be deceptive. Still, something about it just didn't seem right to me, and by that, I didn't mean that it was most likely extraterrestrial. No - it felt like it was calling out to me. Or rather whispering. Like voices very close to my ear... Hopefully merely my imagination.

I forced my thoughts back to reality. "Really very unusual," I murmured when I realized that Coulson had continued talking. This sentence was almost always appropriate in such a situation. "You weren't listening again, were you?" I pressed my lips together and nodded. By now every agent I worked with should be used to me either not following instructions or simply not hearing them. Nevertheless, thanks to my 'creativity in the field' and my exceptional fighting skills, I had managed to stay on duty for a whole 6 years.

"Why did you call me here anyway?" I quickly changed the subject.
"If you had listened, you would know." I smiled innocently, and Coulson sighed. "You're supposed to keep an eye on this place. I trust you, God knows why." "So I'm supposed to babysit this thing?" "And make sure it doesn't get kidnapped. If we're right, it could be a powerful weapon." "And S.H.I.E.L.D loves to be right... Why don't you do it yourself?" If he was about to miss something like that, he must have something going on. "I have to babysit Iron Man." That was a good reason. From what he'd told me, it was definitely justified.

"Somehow I don't believe it's as heavy as you claim." I crossed my arms over my chest and waited for his reaction. "It's not actually heavy. The hammer has a mass of maybe a kilo and a half, but somehow it seems to have grown into the ground." That sounded even more suspicious than anything he had said before.

Coulson noticed my obvious mistrust. "Try, if you like." He looked at me encouragingly, whereupon my gaze drifted to the hammer. "Are you sure?" "Why not? It doesn't emit any dangerous radiation. We tested that right when we got here. Otherwise, no one else would have been allowed to try either. So... see for yourself." He took a few steps back and continued to watch me with his hands in his pockets.

I hesitated for a moment but then walked towards the unknown object with even more determination, put my hand on the handle, and pulled hard. I almost fell, but was able to take a step back in time to keep my balance.

Something had changed. Not just in the circumstances; but within me as well. I could feel it very clearly. I felt stronger, healthier. Every cell in my body seemed to vibrate.

Everyone was staring at me.

I was staring at the hammer in my hand.

"It's not that heavy," I laughed, swinging it back and forth. "That... How did you do that?", Coulson wanted to know, astonished. "Just lifted it up. You should really reconsider your team if they're incapable of even that." The confused and admiring looks of the agents around me unsettled me more than I'd like to admit, but I quickly regained control over myself.

My boss, however, just raised his eyebrows. "Do that again." Maybe I should have just left it alone. Then perhaps the whole story would have turned out differently and ended right here. But now it was too late. What has been done cannot be undone, so I followed the order, placed the hammer exactly where it was before, and then picked it up again without any problems.

"Please don't make a big fuss about it..." I looked at him with my very rarely used puppy eyes. "It's an unknown object and you've done something with it that no one else here has been able to do. Of course, I'm going to make a fuss about it," he explained and, thanks to the worried expression he gave me as he looked at me, I was already expecting him to send me to a lab and have me experimented on.

I was not disappointed.
