{ ML POV}
"And five, six, seven, eight!" Sandra, San Diego Charter's pom coach calls. All around her, girls start to dance, and Meghan joins in. A smile lights her face as they go into the fouetté turns. Nothing could get better than this.
"Good work, Meghan!" Sandra calls, and Meghan's smile widens. She loves getting compliments from her coach, especially since she's in the runnings for this year's team captain. That would make her the first sophomore ever to be a captain of any sport at her school.
Meghan strikes the final pose, and Sandra starts clapping. "Nice job today, ladies! Go home, get some rest, we have the pep rally Monday. Don't forget your uniform!"
Meghan walks over to the bleachers where her water bottle and duffel bag are waiting. Her best friend, Kameron, comes up beside her and takes a swig from her water bottle that matches Meg's.
"You looked fabulous out there today," Kam says and pulls her hair down from the ponytail its in. "Your high kicks have improved so much since last year."
Meghan smiles a bit, and throws her long brown hair into a messy bun. "Thanks Kammy. Your C-jumps are pretty awesome, too," she says, and shoulder's her duffel.
"I've been practicing!" she says, and runs her fingers through her shoulder-length curly red hair. Kam was basically a canon Princess Merida- pale skin, Scottish background, deep blue eyes. She was just about the prettiest girl in their school, and everyone knew it. But it wasn't always that way- once upon a time, Meghan and Kameron had been the nerdy girls who always sat in the back of the class and fangirled about random books, mostly the Percy Jackson series. At one point, they were convinced they were actually characters from the book in another life(forgive them- they weren't in the right mind). They got picked on for reading all the time and for what they wore, seeing as neither of them really cared about their looks. That all changed the summer after their fifth grade year. Meghan started getting highlights in her chocolate brown hair, Kameron cut hers to her shoulders. They both learned how to do their makeup, and they went shopping for cuter clothes. They were tired of being made fun of. On the outside, they were Meg and Kam, glamorous preppies. On the inside, they were still Meggers and Kammy, fangirls, nerds, and best friends.
On their way out of the gym, Meghan nearly runs into Brandon, her best guy-friend since she was seven.
"Hey, Meggers," he says and flicks her hair.
Meghan blushes, realizing she's in spanks and a sports bra. And really sweaty. "Oh, hey, Brandon," she says, and crosses her arms over her chest.
"Are you riding home with me or Kam today?" he asks. "I waited just in case."
Kam steps up, basically saving the day. "We're going home to get ready for the party tonight. In fact, we should leave now, so we can start getting ready. Bye Brandon," she says, and pulls her down the hall towards the parking lot. She turns around and waves at Brandon, and he smiles.
"God, you need to get your emotions in check," Kam tells her as they walk out of the school and towards her silver VW Bug.
"I know," Meg says, opens the trunk, and slings her bag in. "It's really hard though," she whines.
"Yeah well too bad, if you don't, you're gonna embarrass yourself. And you know it," she says, and shuts the trunk.
Meghan walks up to the front of the car and slides into the passenger seat. "Hey, nothing could be as bad as the snail incident."
Kam snorts, clearly remembering. "That I agree with."
When Meghan and Kam were in sixth grade, this kid, Durant Montgomery, had a huge crush on Meghan. When he asked Meghan out and she said no, he decided to act like an eight year old and put a snail in her shoe after gymnastics day in PE. When she went to put her shoe on, she screamed and said someone had crapped in her shoe. When the gym teacher had found that it was just a dead snail, the whole class laughed at her. She had been so embarrassed, she didn't go to school for three days.
