Felix, a long time ago, made peace with the fact that he would never be woken up by normal means. This was proven when the morning after they arrived in the Amethyst City, he was startled awake by Hinata wailing.
Felix jolted out of bed and looked all around, searching for the source of the problem, but there wasn't anything inherently dangerous in the room. There was no sign of what was making Hinata cause such a racket. The children were safe, and somehow still asleep as Hinata wailed, so Felix didn't see what the problem was. However, he did notice that Hyunjin and Chan were in the room, meaning they'd left their rooms at some point in the night, but that wouldn't cause Hinata this much distress.
"What's going on?" Felix questioned. Hyunjin opened his mouth to reply when Hinata answered the question herself in her wailing.
"My words are gone!" She cried, holding her wrist as if her hand had been cut off.
Felix walked over to where Hinata was sitting in the corner, taking her wrist in his hand. She hadn't been lying. Her soulmate words were gone. Instead, there was a large black handprint on her forearm, just below her elbow bend. There were no words on her other wrist either, but there was another vaguely triangular-shaped blob on her collarbone.
Felix pulled his sleeve up, looking at his own wrists. Sure enough, his soulmate words were gone as well. Instead, there was a black mark on one of his hands, as if someone was interlocking fingers with him, and a black handprint on his cheek. He turned to Hyunjin and Chan, who were both checking themselves for their words. Their words were gone too.
Felix held the hand with the black mark up and Hyunjin stepped forward, looking curiously at the mark. He held his hand out as well and the two of them interlocked their fingers. Suddenly, the mark on Felix's hand glowed brightly. When they pulled away, Felix's hand was now a myriad of brilliant colors.
The elytrian's eyes widened and he noticed that Hinata had stopped crying. He turned to Chan, who eyed the handprint on Felix's cheek. The vampire brought his right hand up and rested it on his soulmate's cheek, watching as the handprint glowed just like his hand had, turning a million different colors. Felix expected to feel something, but it felt like nothing at all.
Hyunjin and Chan both started searching for black marks on themselves. Hyunjin found a black mark on his knuckles and when they looked at his back, they found that his entire back was covered in black with arm-shaped marks coming around his waist as if someone was hugging him from behind.
As if they both instinctively knew which was which, Chan grabbed Hyunjin's sleeve, pulling his hand up to his mouth and gently kissing his knuckles, while Felix hugged him from behind, watching in awe as both marks turned the same brilliant colors that Felix had.
Chan, however, could only find one mark. He had a singular mark on the inside of his hand that was vaguely hand-shaped. Hyunjin touched that one and it became colorful the way they now expected it to, but they couldn't find Felix's.
Felix, as if he already knew where it was, patted Chan on the head. One second, the vampire had pure black hair. The next, his hair was a rainbow of colors.
The three soulmates stared at each other in disbelief. Felix glanced at Hinata to find her staring at them as well, looking at the rainbow marks on each of them.
"What could have caused this?" Hyunjin questioned softly, looking down at the colorful handprint on her hip.
Felix glanced at where the children and the rest of Felix's siblings were somehow still asleep. "I might have a theory. Have you noticed how most of us have really strong magic? Like it's so strong that some of us can't control it?"
