Felix, a long time ago, made peace with the fact that he would never be woken up by normal means. This was proven when the morning after they arrived in the Amethyst City, he was startled awake by Hinata wailing.
Felix jolted out of bed and looked all around, searching for the source of the problem, but there wasn't anything inherently dangerous in the room. There was no sign of what was making Hinata cause such a racket. The children were safe, and somehow still asleep as Hinata wailed, so Felix didn't see what the problem was. However, he did notice that Hyunjin and Chan were in the room, meaning they'd left their rooms at some point in the night, but that wouldn't cause Hinata this much distress.
"What's going on?" Felix questioned. Hyunjin opened his mouth to reply when Hinata answered the question herself in her wailing.
"My words are gone!" She cried, holding her wrist as if her hand had been cut off.
Felix walked over to where Hinata was sitting in the corner, taking her wrist in his hand. She hadn't been lying. Her soulmate words were gone. Instead, there was a large black handprint on her forearm, just below her elbow bend. There were no words on her other wrist either, but there was another vaguely triangular-shaped blob on her collarbone and a long black mark spanning the top of her back.
Felix pulled his sleeve up, looking at his own wrists. Sure enough, his soulmate words were gone as well. Instead, there was a black mark on one of his hands, as if someone was interlocking fingers with him, and a black handprint on his right cheek. He turned to Hyunjin and Chan, who were both checking themselves for their words. Their words were gone too.
Felix held the hand with the black mark up and Hyunjin stepped forward, looking curiously at the mark. He held his hand out, which also had a black mark, and the two of them interlocked their fingers. Suddenly, the marks on their hands glowed brightly. When they pulled away, their hands were a myriad of brilliant colors.
The elytrian's eyes widened and he noticed that Hinata had stopped crying. He turned to Chan, who eyed the handprint on Felix's cheek. The vampire brought his right hand up and rested it on his soulmate's cheek, watching as the handprint glowed just like his hand had, turning a million different colors. Felix expected to feel something, but it felt like nothing at all. Chan brought his hand away, marveling at the colors there.
However, when they turned to Chan, they couldn't find any other mark than Felix's, on his hand. They searched his entire body, not finding anything until Hyunjin looked up at Chan's hair and got an idea. He brought his hand up and set it on the top of Chan's head, watching in disbelief as the rainbow seemed to cascade down his head. Chan looked down at the two of them with an incredulous laugh.
The three soulmates stared at each other in disbelief. Felix glanced at Hinata to find her staring at them as well, looking at the rainbow marks on each of them.
"What could have caused this?" Hyunjin questioned softly, looking down at the colorful handprint on her hip.
Felix glanced at where the children and the rest of Felix's siblings were somehow still asleep. "I might have a theory. Have you noticed how most of us have really strong magic? Like it's so strong that some of us can't control it?"
Hyunjin and Chan both nodded, so Felix continued, "Magic was dormant for so long that it just kept building and building so that once Francesca came to be, it was ten times stronger than it had been before. It evolved as time went on even if no one could use it. I think that soulmates must have evolved with it, but since magic was dormant, the effects of the soulmate evolution were also dormant. Meaning they didn't have a chance to reach us. But now that Francesca is finally restoring magic to the world, she's letting these evolutions reach us as well."
