A cloudy Friday morning followed a night of non-stop rain. My stomach twisted at the thought of facing the wet streets on my drive to school
A glance at the clock in my room told me I had twenty-five minutes until the school bell, so I grabbed my bag and made my way to the living room, hoping for a good day today, though very unlikely.
My shoulder slumps as I enter the living room. Bottles of beer littered the room, I reluctantly collected them. On days like this, I wished more than ever that Dad was here to repair what was left of our family.
"The pizza! Heat the darn pizza, Ava!" Mom's voice resounded the entire house from her room, Her hoarse voice, was a giveaway for the empty beer bottles I'd just collected from the living room.
Mom dished more commands without coming out of her room, and I wondered if she thought I was a robot designed specifically for her tasks.
By the time I finished my involuntary chores around the house, it was barely fifteen minutes before the bell. I grabbed two slices of pizza, my backpack, and my car key from the table and sprinted to the garage.
The fog outside was so thick and I wasn't going to risk driving fast to beat time, especially to a school I wasn't so excited to be; and in a car I held sentiments towards.
As I started the gray car, I caught my reflection in the car mirror, My auburn wavy hair bounced on each side of my face, giving me a look that always made me appear more confident than I felt. The radio hummed an unfamiliar song as I drove the wet streets. I sang along with my eyes glued to the road ahead
The cloudy weather mirrored my tension as I neared Springdale High. My knuckles whitened against the wheel, praying to arrive at school late enough, that is when the bell rings, and my classmates are heading to class, but early enough to not be punished for being late.
As I approached the turn, I slowed down to a halt as the lights turned red before I could make my turn. On a normal day, I would have beat the red light, but I didn't have it in me to break any rules today, especially with the fog covering the road.
Just as I slammed the brakes in wait for the light to turn green, a deafening screech jolted me. A red motorcycle that had been tailgating me slammed into my side and my car moved violently.
Still frozen by the shock, my eyes caught the red blur disappearing into the fog. My shock disappeared immediately
as my brain sent jolts of fury at the piece of jerk who was not going to be at the receiving end of my wrath.
My breath hitched as I saw my rearview mirror, shattered into tiny little pieces. The pieces lay on the wet pavement, while the mirror case was dangling from its place, held by a piece of loose wire, making my morning a thousand times worse.
"Arggggghhhh!!!" I scream into my car
This wasn't just a minor accident, it was a disaster..
Tears welled up in my eyes, blurring the already foggy world outside, and I almost make a uturn back to comfort of my room. My day had just taken a terrible turn and I knew school wasn't my best option.
Then I remembered mom. She would know something was wrong if I go back home, and when she finds out it's the car she never wanted me to drive, I do not know what her reaction would be- Anger, disappointment, sadness… Whatever it was, finding out right now wasn't also the best option.
The blare of horns not stopping brought me back to reality, the red light had turned green and I was stuck holding up the other cars behind me from moving forward. With a sigh, I step on the gas pedal and don't stop until I pulled into the crowded school parking lot.
