"People believe that Halloween night is a time when spirits can connect with the living, but in reality, the origins of Halloween date back to a Celtic celebration known as Samhain, marking the harvest and the beginning of winter. They..."
Ms. Anabella's voice explaining the history of Halloween droned on in Katherine's ears like the buzzing of bees. The sixteen-year-old girl fought to stifle a yawn and tried to keep her watery eyes wide open.
The chilly November air made her drowsy despite wearing a bright yellow sweater matching her scarf and gloves. Katherine glanced at the sluggish clock on the wall and sighed internally. Why wasn't the lesson over yet?
A small chuckle from a boy made Katherine turn to her side. She found Ethan grinning mischievously at her before teasing, "Katherine the Cat wants to curl up by the fireplace."
How annoying!
Katherine promptly kicked her childhood friend's leg, causing Ethan to groan, "Ouch! Kathy, don't kick me!"
"Katherine, what are you doing?!" The round-faced Ms. Anabella, framed by her round glasses, looked like an owl when she sharply stared in their direction. The woman, who had towering reddish-brown hair, folded her arms and spoke sternly. "If you're not intending to learn, just leave the class!"
"S-sorry," Katherine mumbled, not daring to meet the gaze of one of the strictest teachers at Riverside Academy.
Ms. Anabella huffed but resumed her explanation. "So, due to the influence of Christian religion, the festival evolved..."
Katherine turned to Ethan and stuck out her tongue. They playfully nudged each other when Ms. Anabella's attention shifted to the chalkboard.
"Ethan the Silly, just wait and see; I'll get back to you later," whispered Katherine, making him chuckle.

"So, what costume will you wear for the Halloween celebration?" Janeth asked during lunch break.
The cafeteria looked crowded. Students queued for food or sat at long tables with their lunch trays.
Katherine chewed on her spaghetti, deep in thought. She didn't want her mother to spend money on a disposable costume. "I think I've seen my mom's red dress in the attic; I'll wear that."
"That's a good idea. With your red hair, you could be Sally from Nightmare Before Christmas. I'll be Jack. I'll wear a suit and a skull mask," Ethan's voice made Katherine look up; he casually grabbed her grape juice from a tray and sipped it.
"Hey! Who allowed you to drink it?!" Katherine protested. But Ethan just grinned and walked away toward his group of male friends.
Janeth giggled, observing their interaction. The slender girl leaned closer and whispered, "So, are you officially dating now?"
Embarrassment made Katherine's cheeks turn red. She waved off her friend's remark with a shy reply. "W-what? We're just friends."
"Don't be too shy," Janeth advised with a glance at a girl their age who got up from her seat to approach Ethan. "I heard that Deborah will confess her love to him at the Halloween party; you might regret it."
Katherine looked over at Deborah. The girl laughed flirtatiously, flipping her wavy black hair.
"I think you should confess your feelings before it's too late," Janeth added before taking a bite of her hamburger and changing the subject. "Hmm, this is delicious."
Katherine fell silent. She continued eating her spaghetti but started to consider her friend's advice.
