Taylor awoke in the middle of the night to find a strange puddle of liquid seeping into the sheets beneath her. Confused and drenched, she rubbed her eyes and got up to go to the bathroom. As she finished up and washed her hands, she turned on her light. The bright beams of light peered into her eyes, causing her to squint as she adjusted her eyes to the lighting. She started to tug her sheet off of the mattress when she started to feel a cramping sensation in her lower stomach. It went away after a few moments so she started to gather up her bedding and walk to the laundry room. Many strong cramps started coming and going. The times in between were getting shorter. Sitting on the bed, she tried to take a few deep breaths in and out. She didn't know what was happening and she was starting to get worried. She got up and went to the kitchen to get some pain medicine. She was seated on her sofa, attempting to wait for the pain to subside, but it persisted.
As time passed, the young woman tried not to worry herself. Soon, she couldn't take it anymore. She grabbed her phone, called someone, and urgently told them she needed to go to the hospital. The person quickly arrived at her house and she ran into the car, hiding with her purse covering her face. Her mind was racing, thinking of all the possibilities of what could happen. All that could be heard the entire way there was her nails tapping the car door as she anticipated walking in. They soon reached their destination, at the hospital. Pulling her hoodie over her head and getting out of the car, she quickly scurried into the building. The receptionist checked her in and asked about her symptoms before sending her to the waiting room. About thirty seconds later, a doctor came out and called for Taylor. Getting up, she followed the doctor into a room with a bed where she would be given an ultrasound. The doctor asked her many questions like how she was feeling, what she had eaten recently if anything like this had happened before, and if she had any illnesses or conditions. Quickly, she answered all the questions, impatiently waiting for the technician to come in.
In a short three minutes, the ultrasound technician walked in. He washed his hands and then put on gloves before getting the ultrasound gel and rubbing it on her whole stomach. She winced as she felt the cold gel touch her stomach. The technician, Dr. John Peter, then grabbed the transducer and started to rub it onto her stomach starting at the top and working his way down. He carefully looked as if he wanted to make sure everything was okay with her organs. Once he gets to her lower stomach he moves her uterus and realizes there is a full-term fetus inside of her.
Raising his eyebrow, he looked over at her stomach but there was no bump or anything. "Did you know that you are pregnant," He asked her as he nervously bit his lip, waiting for her reaction. Her mind went blank as thoughts started racing through her head so fast she didn't even know what she was thinking
"No, No sir, I didn't." Her heart started quickly beating as she was so confused. How didn't she know? Why were there no symptoms? "How.." She paused as she looked up at the screen
"How far along am I," Taylor asked."It looks to be your full term. You could have your baby any day now. By the looks of it, the baby looks ready now. I'm going to assume that what you woke up to this morning was your water breaking."
She looked up at him and sighed. She didn't know what she was going to do. She had always said she would keep her baby, even if it was unexpected, but now she just felt confused. She knew she had to give birth to this baby, but what would happen after that?
"I'm going to clean you up, then give you some time to think," Dr. Peter said as he wiped the gel off her stomach. After she pulled her shirt down, he took off his gloves, washed his hands, and walked up to the door. "Ring the bell if you need anything, The doctor will be back in about 15 minutes." Nodding her head, she watched as he left the room. She thought as she took a very deep breath.
"I need to call my mom." She murmured to herself before scavaging around for her phone. Once she found it, she called her mom, hoping she'd pick up.
"Yes, baby? Are you okay? You never call me this late." Andrea questioned. Taylor nodded as if she could hear her nod. "Yes, mom. I'm fine, well not really. I need to you to come to the hospital as soon as you can. I'll explain everything once you get here."
15 minutes later, the doctor came in. "We are going to move you to the labor and delivery room," Dr Amanda Michael explained. After she helped Taylor off the bed and gather her things, she walked her all the way down to the delivery room where she would be having her baby.
Her mother showed up with her father about an hour later. She explained everything to them. They had always unconditionally supported her. Although she was 21, she is their baby and they have always been right behind her, every step of the way.
Around 8 hours later her contractions were consistent, she needed to have the baby as soon as she could. She rang the bell and the doctors and nurses quickly came into the room. 30 minutes later, she delivered her beautiful baby.
As much as she was in pain, she felt blessed with this suddenly birthed beautiful baby lying on her chest. The now young mother watched as they cleaned and weighed the baby.
"Your baby is a girl! Do you have any names in mind yet, Mom?" The nurse explained as she looked at Taylor.
Taylor had always had this one name implanted in her mind. She didn't know why, but she had always wanted to name her daughter this name.
Looking down at the baby, then at her parents, she nodded before looking at the nurse.
"Eleanor.. Eleanor Jude Swift."
She honestly didn't know who the father was, there were two possible answers but she decided that she would be a responsible mother and raise her daughter with no help. Also, she wouldn't want the possible fathers to be a father figure in her daughter's life so she quickly chose not to tell them.
Taylor looked down at her baby swaddled up in a blanket. She knew in this moment that this baby would be her pride and show. Kissing the top of her daughter's head, she whispered.
"I love you, Eleanor Jude."
