The next morning, Sam woke me up at the ass-crack of dawn. He yanked me out of bed like I was some kind of human popsicle stuck to a couch. "Get your ass up, man! We've got hiking to do!"

I groaned, still half-dead. I'd spent the entire night talking with Laurine omg, and now I felt like a zombie. "Five more minutes," I muttered, my face buried in my pillow.

"Nope, no more minutes! Get up!" Sam insisted, pulling me to my feet with the determination of a drill sergeant on steroids. He was acting like we'd been best friends for years, even though we'd only met last night. I stumbled around, trying to get dressed while Sam buzzed around like an over-caffeinated bee.

As we headed down to the lobby, my eyes were barely open. The smell of breakfast hit me, and my stomach growled louder than an angry bear. We found a table where everyone was already eating. I plopped down next to Sam, my brain still stuck in sleep mode.

Then Laurine walked in, and holy shit, I almost choked on my own saliva. In the daylight, she was even more stunning. Her long blonde hair shimmered like a goddamn shampoo commercial, and her eyes sparkled like she had tiny disco balls in them. She smiled at me and said, "Hi, Ethan."

My nerves went haywire. "H-Hi," I stammered, my face heating up like a furnace. I was so focused on not saying anything stupid that I barely noticed Angelica and Derek sitting across from us.

Angelica looked at me, curious. "You look so sleepy, Ethan."

My brain went into overdrive. I couldn't exactly tell her I'd been up all night talking to Laurine. "Uh, yeah, just, uh, couldn't sleep," I lied, trying to act casual and failing miserably.

Derek, the human version of a golden retriever, handed me a cup of coffee. "Here, man, you're gonna need this for the hike. Trust me."

I took the coffee gratefully. "Thanks man," I said, taking a sip and feeling the caffeine course through my veins like liquid gold. I glanced at Laurine, who gave me a knowing smile that made my heart do weird, awkward flips in my chest.

Sam, oblivious to my internal meltdown, was busy shoveling pancakes into his mouth like he hadn't eaten in a week. "So, you guys ready for this hike, we gonna camp near the river you know? it's gonna be epic!" he said with his mouth full, syrup dripping down his chin like a toddler.

I just nodded, trying to focus on anything other than Laurine sitting so close to me. This was going to be one hell of a day.

The sun beat down mercilessly, turning the forest into a sauna with trees. We trudged along, our teacher leading the way like Moses parting the Red Sea, and I was stuck in the back with Sam and Laurine. Sam, bless his chatty soul, was holding hands with his girlfriend, gabbing on like he was auditioning for a wilderness TED Talk.

"Imagine if we get lost out here," Sam rambled, gesturing wildly at the trees closing in around us. "We'd be bear food in no time. Have you heard about those crazed woodsmen who live off the grid? They could be watching us right now!"
