Prologue

The Mumbai twilight painted the sky in hues of saffron and indigo sa Vaishnavi Sharma hurried through the crowded streets. The 19 year-old tucked a strand of wayward hair behind her ear, her mind still lingering on the ancient Sanskrit text she'd been translating at the museum.

"Vai! Wait up!"

She turned to see her friend Shreya jogging to catch up, the tinkling of her bangles barely audible over the busy street noises.

"Lost in another century again?" Shreya teased, falling into the step beside her.

Vaishnavi smiled sheepishly, "You know me too well."

As they walked, Vaishnavi's gaze drifted to an old temple tucked between modern buildings. Something about it called to her, a whisper just beyond hearing. She paused, drawn by an inexplicable pull to explore.

"Vai? Are you okay?" Shreya's voice seemed distant.

Vaishnavi blinked, the world around her suddenly hazy, "I just need to... I'll be right back."

Ignoring Shreya's protests, she entered the temple's premise. The scent of sandalwood and age enveloped her. In a shadowy corner, something gleamed. Vaishnavi reached out, her fingers brushing the cool metal of the temple door.

The world tilted.

Images flooded her mind: vast oceans of milk, cosmic dances, the birth and death of universes, She saw two shadowy figures surrounded by divine light in embrace of each other.

Just then a sharp ringing crossed through her ears, tempting her to cover her head with both hands and feeling her consciousness slowly slipping away.

The last sound she heard-of were the alarmed cries of her dear friend before completely blacking out.
