Di, I'll drop you, please," Ritwik said earnestly, looking at me with concern.
"No, Ritwik. Go and attend your meeting; I can manage on my own," I replied firmly.
"Fine," he said, dragging out the word in an exaggerated, slightly dramatic tone.
"Bye," I said, turning toward the door.
"Bye, Di. And... I'm sorry," he added softly, pulling me into a hug.
"Ritwik, you've been saying sorry every minute for the past week. My ears are going to bleed at this rate," I said, rolling my eyes but smiling a little. "I forgive you, okay?"
He gave me a small smile, leaned in, and kissed my forehead gently. Without saying another word, I left, feeling the warmth of his gesture linger as I walked away.
Today, I was returning to Udaipur it's been a week.Ritwik gave me the space I needed, letting me spend my days buried in books, jotting down thoughts, and diving into my work. For the first time in a long while, I found peace in isolation. No one to judge me. No one to whisper behind my back.
But peace is fragile, and reality always finds a way to drag you back.
My stomach churned at the thought. The city, once my sanctuary, now felt like a battlefield. A place where my name had been dragged through the mud, where every corner hid whispers calling me a whore, a mistress, a woman undeserving of respect.
By the time I reached home, my resolve had solidified. I wouldn't let their opinions break me. Not again.
"Namaste, Maa," I said, touching her feet with a warm smile.
"My doll!" Maa exclaimed, pulling me into a tight hug and kissing my forehead. "I missed you so much."
"And I missed you the most, Ikaaaa!" my bhabhi chimed in, waddling towards me.
"Slowly, beta," Maa cautioned her.
But Bhabhi, ever the dramatic one, broke into a mock slow-motion walk, her arms outstretched like she was enacting a Bollywood reunion scene. It made me laugh out loud.
"I missed youuuuu!" she said, wrapping me in a bear hug.
"I missed you more, Bhabhi," I replied, grinning. My hand instinctively went to her belly. "And how's my little angel doing?"
"Few more days, and this angel will be in your arms," she said, her face glowing. "Doctor gave me the date for next month."
"Really? I can't wait!" I said, my heart swelling. This baby... there's something about her. I feel so connected already. I'm sure it'll be a daughter, and maybe...maybe the child I lost.
"I have a meeting, Maa! Too much drama in just one week. My phone is buzzing with complaints every other minute!"
With that, I grabbed my bag and rushed towards my room, shouting over my shoulder, "Bye, everyone! I'll be late!"
