"Don't call me that again!" Chhoti Maa's voice exploded, her eyes flashing with a fury that made the room feel colder.
"Why, Didi?" Mrs. Rajvansh replied, her voice trembling as she tried to hold her ground.
Without warning, Chhoti Maa slapped her. The sound echoed through the room, sharp and brutal.
Chhoti Maa was on fire. She had barely been here a week, and already, she was putting everyone in their place, tearing apart the facade that had been built over the years.
"We always knew you were never a good daughter," Chhoti Maa spat, her voice dripping with disdain. "But I never thought you'd fail as a mother too."
"What was I supposed to do, Didi? I was left alone by everyone!" Mrs. Rajvansh's voice cracked, desperation and guilt intermingled.
"You weren't left alone," Chhoti Maa countered, her eyes burning with contempt. "Your mistakes—your madness—took you far away from everything."
I couldn't explain it, but watching Mrs. Rajvansh cry and getting slapped by Chhoti Maa oddly brought me a sense of twisted peace.
Then, the next words that came out of Mrs. Rajvansh's mouth hit like a thunderclap. "I was raped, Didi... after you all threw me out of the house."
"Just shut up!" Chhoti Maa shouted, her voice seething with anger. "You weren't raped! You loved that man, we threw you out because you were sleeping with a married man—a man with a child. Because of you, I lost my father. The day he threw you out, he had a heart attack. He left me forever—everything because of you. You were sleeping with him, and that's why you got pregnant. How dare you turn yourself into the victim? How dare you destroy that little girl's life? What was her fault?!"
The room was deafeningly silent. The weight of Chhoti Maa's words hung in the air, suffocating us all.
Mrs. Rajvansh blinked, her eyes wide in disbelief.
"What... What wasn't she raped? She said she was raped..." I said
"She lied!" Chhoti Maa roared.
Ritwik's voice cut through the chaos, trembling, fragile. "You lied, Maa?" he asked, the words shattering the last remnants of his composure.
Mrs. Rajvansh's face twisted with sorrow and regret. "I had to. You and your sister weren't even willing to see my face. You blamed me for everything. I realized my mistake, but I knew I had no excuse for what I did. I acted on impulse... and I regret it. But it happened."
"Really, Maa?" Ritwik's voice cracked. "Why?"
Tears welled in Mrs. Rajvansh's eyes as she reached out to him. "I'm sorry, beta," she whispered.
"Shut up, Mrs. Rajvansh," Ritwik shouted, his voice cold and broken. "Just... shut up. Such a char....."
"Calm down, Ritwik," Vriti said, her voice controlled but firm.
