Chapter 1
“Gio, wait for me! You’re always in a hurry!” I hear Rory shouting behind me as I walk in a fast pace.
I looked at my wristwatch to see the time. It’s already 5:23PM and my shift at the coffee shop where I am working will start at 6PM. The sky is covered with greyish clouds and the rain is threatening to pour anytime. I let out a heavy sigh as I slow down my pace so that Rory could catch up with me.
“Seriously, you need to slow down and relax!” Rory finally spoke after catching her breath.
“Rory, you can go ahead and have fun even without my presence,” I said and stopped abruptly to look at her.
“Just for once, Gio, come to the bar with us! You need to have some fun!” Pangungumbinsi ng kaibigan sa akin.
“I already told you that I have work. Plus, it’s Thursday for pete’s sake! You know that Friday is my day off, right?” I said, almost annoyed since time is running out before my shift starts.
I admit that I haven’t fully enjoyed my college life due to my part time job. But I wouldn’t miss work tonight just to have some fun at the said bar. Money is more important or else I won’t be able to give a share on the rent of the apartment where Rory and I live.
“You remember your promise? That you’ll let yourself enjoy now that we’re in our junior year? Our senior year is fast approaching!” She asked me with hopeful eyes.
I knew and haven’t forgotten that promise I swore to Rory months ago before we part ways for the summer vacation. I wanted to have fun but I guess my responsibility won’t let me have the fun I am wanting to attain. It’s a sad fact about life. No matter how you want things to be your way, responsibility has to come first.
“I’m so sorry for turning you down tonight, Rory. Tomorrow night, I’ll be happy to go with you if you still want to go.” I saw a glimpse of joy in her eyes after hearing me say those words.
She hugged me right away and jumped out of joy. I can’t help but smile after seeing her reaction. I love Rory so damn much and she’s my happy pill! One of the best people I’ve met in college alongside Gavin who’s an amazing friend as well.
“Now, I really have to go since my shift will start soon. Love you so much, Rory!” I let go of the hug and waved my hand as my goodbye to her.
Rory does the same while smiling from ear-to-ear. I started to run as I look at my wristwatch once again. I can’t afford to be late as showing tardiness won’t give a good impression to my boss.
Throughout those three years of working at the said coffee shop, I haven’t been late. Ever. But upon assessing the situation I am currently in, it looks like I’ll have my first late tonight as the rain starts to pour.
Bumuntong hininga ako at sinuot ang hoodie. I’m not bringing my umbrella and I can’t afford to wait any longer in this waiting shed for the rain to stop pouring. I then decided to run again as the hood of my hoodie became my shield from the pouring rain. Thank God the coffee shop is just nearby!
The bell chimes as I push the glass door of the coffee shop. My co-workers greeted me with a smile. Some of them are also students that are younger than me. Mabuti na lang at tumatanggap ng estudyante ang owner ng coffee shop na ito. Working here has gained me the experience of what a work environment really is.
Katapos kong magpalit ng damit sa staff room, sinuot ko ang pulang apron at tinali ang buhok sa isang clean bun. Tiningnan ko ang sarili ko sa salamin habang sinusuot ang pulang mesh hat.
