Rosalia's POV
John F. Kennedy Int'l Airport
New York City7:01 p.m.
"My eyes are killing me," I said, rubbing my face as I watched Kassauni put our luggage into the back of the silver Cadillac Escalade.
"Yuh hungry?" He asked me.
"Yes, I am. Jardani is too," I told him.
We did have lunch on the plane but I'd feel greedy asking the flight attendant for more food. She was an absolute sweetheart, making sure that we liked whatever she made. I also love that she didn't stay around to talk and kept it professional because maybe I wouldn't know what to say.
"Are you guys ready to go?" Larry questioned, closing the trunk.
"Yeah, but we wanna stop and get some food. That's good with you?" Kassauni asked him.
"Whatever you want," Larry's gruff voice said and he gave Kassauni a curt nod.
Larry headed over to where Zeno was and started to whisper something to him.
The two bodyguards were intimidating, their tall, muscular frames commanding attention. Their sharp eyes scanned the surroundings with a practiced intensity, their movements precise and calculated.
You could tell they were highly trained, their military background evident in their confident demeanor and alert posture. Well, that's what Kassauni told me. They're both ex-military.
They're both handsome men, probably married too. Well, only Larry had a silver band around his ring. It makes me wonder if their spouses were okay with them risking their lives to save other people.
Also, I never stopped to even ask why they picked us up. I'm grateful nonetheless and Kassauni seems to know them. Probably met them when he came overseas last Christmas.
"Mama, come nuh," Kassauni said, touching my lower back.
"Okay," I said, holding onto his shoulder to fix the back of my sandals.
Jardani was taking the car behind us that Zeno was driving. Our luggage couldn't all fit in one car so that's why they both came. Kassauni opened the back door and I climbed him, making space for him. He shut the door after getting in and then Larry drove off shortly after.
The SUVs drove out of the packed airport and I gazed out at the city landscape as Larry drove with a smile on my face.
A thrill of excitement ran through me and a bit of nervousness. My boyfriend and I just flew miles away from our families to attend college and move in together. I'm excited but also nervous. New York is a big city after all.
Taking out my phone, I took a video of the scenery. As I captured the sights and sounds of the city, the bright lights and towering skyscrapers whizzed by in a blur.
Everything looks absolutely beautiful.
After feeling pleased with the video, I stopped it and watched the cars drive by.
Since we didn't know what exactly to get, we all agreed on a place called Dinosaur Bar-B-Que.
While Jardani and I were open to trying their brisket burgers, ribs, and Mac and cheese, Kassauni settled on wings, a regular burger, and fries.
We also stopped at Target for some snacks and then pulled up to our new home. I carefully picked up the food bag and Kassauni got out, holding the door for me. He took the bag from me and I got out, making sure I wasn't leaving anything behind.
