**Hi everyone! This is the first chapter. I'm very excited to explore the story with you all. The next chapter will be posted in about a week from now, so stayed tuned. I hope you enjoy!**
Yona looked up at the menacing, grayscale building. He focused on the third floor, where he would be working. I probably shouldn't fly in, and roof entrances are always locked anyways, he thought. But it would be better than dealing with the front desk. The front desk was inevitable. It would be another human looking him up in the 'vampire system', a method of separating human and vampire databases. This meant dirty looks and condescending talks.
It had been 10 years since the formation of the Ministry of Human-Vampire Relations, and he would be the first vampire to work there. It petrified him. But it was exciting, too - he was in a position where he could stand up for his people, on human grounds, not the patronizing forums that vampires had to go to. Of course, it was a grunt-level desk job. Work is work, I shouldn't get my hopes up, he thought as he opened the double door into the government building.
Security immediately saw the paleness of his skin and stopped him. A young guard, tall yet skinny, said to him:
"This is a government building, er, sir. You can't come in here. You know, your... kind... and all."
Yona was immediately reducing to stuttering - "I- uh- but I- for the government- I-" Then he saw his savior. Margaret William, the human who fought for and ultimately hired him after a short but contentious political battle, yelled at the guard:
"Stop, man! He's the new guy, you don't need to go after him! He's with me, I hired him to work at the Ministry, and today's his first day."
"Oh. I'm sorry Margaret, you could have warned me yourself if you wanted him to come in here without a problem" replied the young guard.
"It should've been in your briefing, Charlie. Anyways, how's your fiancée? She hasn't been in to visit recently, and she always brought some good donuts. I hope you two are well!"
"Well, she's been sick. Nothing else." Said Charlie, who was fidgeting with his radio.
Yoma, not noticing he was being ignored, was thinking about how delicious donuts tasted when he was a human. It lowered his spirits, that he would not be able to taste them again. His pale skin made him stick out like a sore thumb among his two darker peers. He tried to regain his focus, but found himself lost in nostalgia.
"Yoma!" said Margaret, snapping Yoma out of his thoughts and making him visibly jump. She laughed, saying, "I guess vampires aren't completely fearless! Now, let's go up to my office, and we can discuss things further."

"So, let's get down to business, Yoma." Said Margaret, now sitting across from him at an expensive-looking mahogany desk. "You're a vampire. One of the good ones, in my opinion, as you have been shown to share the same desire we all do - to stop the floodgates from opening."
Yoma had not been a daywalker for long. It was a long, drawn-out process becoming acquainted with the sun. It was a process that took a lot of energy out of the usually animated vampire. Weeks later, here he was with a government job. "Yes, that's the goal." He replied blankly, worried that everything he said or did could lead to a disaster.
"Calm down." Margaret replied. "You don't have to be so cautious. You were hired not because of your qualifications - which are honestly quite bad - it was because you're a good person..." She trailed off, slowing down at saying the word person. Yoma winced, and realized he had to become himself.
