"You ever think that, maybe, it's not you?"

You sit back and stare at Felix blankly.

"Of course it's me. I'm the one who expects that they'll be someone who will be attentive and reciprocal... and better."

He holds his hands out- *mayhaps* to offer you a speck of common sense. Unfortunately, it wasn't so common in this scenario.

"My dude. But what if."

You lean closer.

"What IF."

You raise an eyebrow.

"They don't do all of these things- not because you have, quote-unquote, 'high expectations' of them, but instead, they're just not ready to be in a relationship with you."

You freeze.

For a second, you feel the tightness in your chest loosen itself.

Huh.

You've been in this relationship for all and about a few months now. There have been ups and downs, but only very recently did you realize that your partner really doesn't give back. It's one thing to message, it's another thing entirely to never be able to plan a date for the both of you, or rely on you for everything that they should take responsibility for. One time, you'd went on a date, and not once did they ask how you were that entire day.

You cross your legs and clasp your hands, very textbook-therapist-esquely.

"...Go on."

He grabs the tissue box from the coffee table. "This is you."

"Great, sheets of dust, as I've always aspired to be in my mid twenties."

"Let me KEEP GOING-"

"OKAY GO KEEP GOING."

You see him stare at the tissue box before looking at you, before looking at the tissue box again. And then glancing at you.

"An uncanny resemblance, I know" you declare.

He holds a hand up in defence, "Please don't get mad at me"

"Why would I-"

Felix reaches into the tissue box.

He grabs every single, beautifully fermented, lined and plied clean tissue from the inside.

The gasp that left you was one you've never heard before; one of absolute betrayal.

Your body curls itself in and you point at the box with your mouth agape.

"DiD YOU JUST"

"I said not TO GET MAD AT ME-"

"Every single one of those is CLEAN-"

"I'LL BUY YOU A NEW ONE! I'LL BUY YOU TEN!"

"FANTASTIC!!" You sarcastically enthuse, "Now I have a relationship that's ran it's course and a gutless tissue box"

He holds the handful of tissues in his hand. He looks to you with squinted eyes. You can tell he's relaying the consequences of his actions in his head while he's trying to read what you might do if he dares to crumple the tissues.

"These-" he gestures them towards you- "are your likes and your needs, everything that you hold inside, everything that matters to you, and everything that you are."

You rub your temples and brainstorm which Canva template to use for your ad that will be the most successful in finding yourself a new roommate.

He picks up two or three tissues from the now crumpled stack and separates them. "These are the things that they fulfill as of right now. And even so, they're things that you want in this relationship, but not necessarily what you need."

"Felix, you don't understand, I did want this relationship-"

"You're right, you're right. At a point in time you did! But is having the same music taste enough? The same passions for art? The same affinity for drinks and the kinds of chocolate you prefer?"

You sit back in your chair. You cross your arms as you look to the floor in thought. No.

"Dude, if you think about it, all the things that keep this afloat are still very surface level. It seems like you've been trying to dig deeper, but they aren't putting in the amount of time and effort that you are- nor do they understand that you can't be the only person providing for the both of you."

"So you're saying... they need to sort themselves out to be ready for this... but I'm already three steps ahead."

Felix slumps back into his chair and raises his arms, "YES! PRECISELY!! YOU SEE IT!!!"

You stare at the ceiling for a moment. You do feel like you're being walked all over. Why did it take you so long to realize?

"So what, do you think I should call it off?"

"I just think you deserve better." Felix shrugs, "Someone who can match everything that you give them."

Hm. He has a point.
