Oh say, can you see

Someone is screaming

By the dawn's early light

Help me, help me please

What so proudly we hailed

The hospital hallways are overflowing

At the twilight's last gleaming

So very different from the once-empty halls of the elementary schools and universities

Whose broad stripes and bright stars

They were empty, now they do not exist

Through the perilous fight

So quiet, a kind of silence that only weapons of mass destruction can leave behind

O'er the ramparts we watched

Unlike the hospital, where mothers weep in despair, children cry out in pain, husbands lay deathly still on their gurneys

Were so gallantly streaming

The doctors and nurses rush around the makeshift curtains with an endless stream of apologies

And the rockets' red glare

I'm sorry, we have run out of anesthesia, we cannot give you anything for the pain

The bombs bursting in air

I'm sorry, there's nothing we can do for your son

Gave proof through the night

I'm sorry, she just passed

That our flag was still there

The apologies continue until they are drowned out by desperate warnings– evacuate, evacuate now

O say, does that star-spangled banner yet wave

There are stars and stripes on the side of the bomb that collapses the hospital on top of countless innocent souls

O'er the land of the free

There are no stars in the sky that can be seen through the dust, the only stripes come from the blood that stains the streets

And the home of the brave

Someone is screaming again
