"Okay, that’s £7.35 please." The man handed me a £10 note, "That’s £2.65 change, would you like a bag?" I asked him, he nodded. I pulled a bag out from the cupboard to my left and placed the books inside.
"Thank you." He said.
"You’re welcome, bye." I said as he headed for the door. He waved as he left. I turned to Liam, "Yay, my 10th sale of the day!" I cheered running into the back room, leaving the door open, to tell Liam
"Yes, well done! That’s quite an achievement!" he said sarcastically.
"Oh shut up! It’s really important to me!" I frowned, he laughed at my expression.
"Stop laughing at me!" I complained which just made him laugh more, it was contagious and soon enough I was laughing too. We were holding each other laughing.
"Excuse me?" a familiar voice called from the shop. I turned around, still laughing, to see none other than Zach standing there. We both stood there frozen to the spot not sure what to say or do. Liam broke the silence by clearing his throat and saying,
"Can I help you?"
"Yeah, I erm…these books please." He said, his eyes not once wavering from me. I stared at the ground as Liam walked over to the counter, me trailing behind him. I felt like a child just been caught doing something they’re not supposed to, but I was unsure why. I’d done nothing wrong, all I was doing was laughing with a friend. Why would I feel bad about that? Maybe because you like him a little more than a friend, a voice whispered in the back of my mind, no, don’t be ridiculous! I told it, but the thought still lingered with me as I reached the counter.
"Holly, how are you?" Zach asked me, it was obvious he wanted something from me.
"Great, now I’m not with you anymore." I said.
"Holly please don’t be like that!" Zach said. Liam was staying out of it for now, he silently scanned the books and Zach paid.
"Would you like a bag?" I asked, he nodded. "Oh look, its plastic just how you like your girls." I smiled making it so fake even one of his dumb bimbos would be able to tell that it’s fake.
"Holly, please hear me out. Just let me explain." He said.
"No, you lying cheat! You’ve got your books now so just leave. Hey maybe you’ll find some stupid slut to snog on your way home!" I yelled angrily.
"Holly, listen, I…" he began.
"I don’t want to hear it. Every word that comes out of your mouth is a lie. So take yourself and your pathetic lies and go find someone else to piss off!" I shouted, feeling a tear trying to escape. I held it in, I wouldn’t cry, I wouldn’t give him the satisfaction.
"Holly, you don’t understand. It wasn’t…" Zach tried to protest.
"Look, I think you should leave. Holly clearly doesn’t want to talk to you. Maybe if you give her some time she’ll eventually come around and listen to what you have to say. But for now I think it would be best if you just kept your distance." Liam tried to calm Zach down and make him leave.
"You can shut up it’s none of your business! Keep your nose out!" Zach snapped at Liam.
"Don’t talk to him like that!" I yelled at Zach.
"Holly, please don’t shut me out. I need you to know the truth." He said slightly calmer.
"No, I already know the truth." I began walking around the counter towards him. "You are a lying, cheating jerk and I never want to see you again." I said trying to keep my voice level. I was trying to make a point.
"Holly…" Zach whispered.
"Just leave." I said, "The door is over there, I’m sure you can manage to get there on your own." I said gesturing towards the door using all my energy not to let my hand shake. He looked at me one last time then left. Liam turned the sign on the door to closed and walked over to me.
"Are you okay?" he asked. I looked up at him with tears streaming down my face. "Aww, come here." He said and pulled me into a hug.
(Zach’s P.O.V)
Oh god, what had I done? She hated me! She was never going to forgive me now. And that stupid guy at the counter, they were laughing. He liked her. I could tell by the way he looked at her and the way he was so protective of her. Man I missed her. How can I go on like this? Without her, I’m nothing.
